COLUMBUS, Ohio--The National Association of Basketball Coaches has named Ohio State’s Aaron Craft as the 2014 National Defensive Player of the Year in Division I. The organization made the announcement Thursday. Craft is the second Ohio State player to be recognized nationally for this award. Greg Oden earned the accolade following the 2006-07 season. Craft ended his career as both the Ohio State and Big Ten’s all-time leader in steals with 337. He owns four of the Top 6 Ohio State single season steals records as well, including the Top 2 spots. His 98 thefts as a sophomore is the Ohio State single-season record and his 89 steals this year rates No. 2 all-time. Nationally, Craft finished in the No. 4 spot in total steals as a senior and was No. 7 in steals per game (2.54). The Big Ten coaches selected Craft as the 2014 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, an honor he also earned in 2012. As a member of the 2014 All-Big Ten Defensive team, Craft is just the second Big Ten student-athlete to earn a spot on the team four times. Over four seasons, Craft was credited with six or more steals in a single game nine times, including a career-high seven steals vs. Iowa as a freshman and against American as a senior. The NABC honor has been awarded since 1987. Craft is just the third point guard to garner the honor in the history of the award. Tommy Amaker, the former Duke point guard and current head coach at Harvard, claimed the first award in 1987. John Linehan of Providence is the most recent point guard to earn the honor. He did so in 2002. Ohio State is one of just five schools nationally to have multiple honorees and the only Big Ten program with more than one. “The NABC National Defensive Player of the Year award culminates one of the most extraordinary careers I’ve experienced in all my years associated the college basketball,” Thad Matta, head coach of the Buckeyes said. “From the first practice through his final game, Aaron Craft utilized every ounce of his ability on the basketball court, particularly on the defensive end. Aaron and his family certainly deserve this recognition. Pronk : Hidden forces undermining Sudanese president authority
Feb 11, 2007 (AMSTERDAM) —The former UN envoy to Sudan said that some hidden forces in Khartoum are hindering a peaceful resolution to the Darfur crisis as well as destabilizing the implementation of the peace agreement in southern Sudan. He further added they could be motivated by a combination of economic, political or religious factors. Jan PronkThe former Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to Sudan, Jan Pronk, told the Sudan Tribune in an interview that some forces are hindering efforts to realize peace in Darfur. He identified these forces as the same ones that attempting to destabilize the south by arming militias. Pronk said that these forces had “never liked the CPA and in turn blamed al-Bashir and his 2nd Vice president Ali Osman Taha for what they thought to be too many concessions made.” He said they could be composed of economic forces linked to oil “or it could just be traditional political forces who want to have a strong huge big Sudan or simply more conservative Islamists. It could be a combination of all that. Pronk mentioned that theses forces are vague in structure and spread across the state apparatus such as the army, the ruling National Congress Party and the security services. However he added that president al Bashir is not personally behind it though he “allows it and may close his eyes in order to stay in power but these forces are quite strong. He also vehemently accused these forces of undermining the role of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS). “I have stood up for my staff and defended them when I was there. The UN mission in Sudan (UNMIS) has been beheaded and the current leadership is officially in charge but in reality they are handling more of the managerial aspect of the peace agreement and they are not backed by New York.” he said. Pronk explained that the Sudanese president opposition to the deployment of UN peacekeepers in Darfur is the outcome of a complex balance of power within the ruling party. He said that Bashir was misinformed and manipulated by these omnipresent forces. He also added that Sudanese president has to weigh two risks : the risk of international sanctions and diplomatic isolation or an internal power strife and domestic turmoil. According to Pronk, al-Bashir chose to avoid the second because the first risk is “practically non-existent. Pronk welcomed the role of the International Criminal Court in Darfur. He said that the upcoming indictments by the ICC would help neutralize forces that are mobilizing militias and are behind the Darfur atrocities. In his response to the motives behind the negative attitude of the Sudanese foreign minister towards him, Pronk said that Lam Akol has acted as the foreign minister of the national unity government and that the SPLM wasn’t supportive of his decision to expel him. However, he underlined that the expulsion “was a violation of the agreement with the UN resolution establishing the UNMIS. The former UN SG envoy said that the Comprehensive Peace Agreement is, in spite of the political disagreements hindering its implementation, still on track. “The road to peace is bumpy and the train may easily derail at some points yet it is still on track. Nonetheless, Pronk considered that the political will of the two peace partners is the key element to resolve all these difficulties. On issue of Abyei, he said that what is important is to “solve the issue politically while guaranteeing security on the ground. The former UN SG envoy to Sudan said that the CPA is strongly linked to the resolution of Darfur crisis, and that even if the CPA didn’t collapse, Darfur crisis may lead southerners to vote against the unity because of their lack of confidence in the Khartoum government. Southerners “will take their own decisions of becoming independent as they don’t want to run the risk of being attacked in the same manner so it ends up being a vicious circle.” He further said that this decision “would be legally acceptable but will not be good for Sudan as a whole and a reason to return to war. The following is the full text of the interview with the former UN Secretary General envoy to Sudan, Jan Pronk. There was a public row in Juba between the Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and his First Vice President Silva Kiir in the celebrations marking 2 years since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). Also, hundreds of people have been killed in bloody clashes that erupted in the southern town of Malakal. Pronk : The CPA is indeed in a difficult situation, but like I said in my last UN Security Council (UNSC) briefing a couple of months ago that it is still on track. The road to peace is bumpy and the train may easily derail at some points yet it is still on track. However there are a number of items that pose significant risks to the CPA such as the events in Malakal which could be repeated in other areas like Wau and Juba. The fighting in Malakal was the worst of its kind since the signing of the CPA. The fact is that the political disagreement between al-Bashir and Kiir has been ongoing for quite some time, but maybe for the first time it came out publicly in this manner. This is not a bad thing in itself and perhaps it is better to have it in public than having it in private. This was not so much of a dispute between the President and his Vice President, but rather between the President of Sudan and the President of Southern Sudan. I think that you should make this distinction. Pronk : No it is not a setback. This is an example of what I have reported before to the UNSC that the CPA may derail from its track and therefore they should stay alert. It is simply a political debate that was made in public and not a violent clash. The CPA is not dead and if there are differences then it is better to come out in the open rather than using it as a means to destabilize the CPA. Everyone have to be made aware of these differences rather than having the armed groups continue to carry out destabilizing activities in the dark. In the same context the status of Abyei remained a controversial issue between the National Congress Party (NCP) and Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) with no resolution till this very moment. The Abyei Boundary Commission decided that Abyei’s should be part of southern Sudan. The Sudanese government argued that the commission has exceeded its mandate by issuing such a recommendation. Pronk : This is no longer an important question because these statements were made a year and a half ago. The question now is how to resolve this issue and it does not help repeating what have been said before. The important thing is to solve the issue politically while guaranteeing security on the ground. As long as the issue has not been solved politically this should not result in more insecurity on the ground which is the main concern. If the NCP and SPLM do not disagree on the Abyei issue then it is not for the UN to take sides because it was neither a UN report nor a UN decision to have a committee presenting a report and setting forth the procedures on the implementation of its findings. The important thing for the UN that there has to be a political solution and as long as they don’t reach one, then it should not have a negative impact on the ground. Let me move on to Darfur. The Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) was signed in May 2006 in Abuja. You have been present at these talks. At the time the DPA was signed you were supportive of it and then later down the road you became critical of it. Pronk : I signed the DPA as a witness. I did not think it was the best outcome, but this is how it came out to be. I was not present during the last couple of days of the negotiations in Abuja, since I had to fly to New York for a meeting. The tables were turned upside down because when I was still there on Sunday Minni Minnawi was vehemently opposed to the proposed text of the agreement. On the other side Abdel Wahid’s faction was more positive towards it. In two days everything changed and Minnawi ended up signing the agreement while Abdel-Wahid did not. It was a complete shift of positions and I am not sure what caused the change. This question needs to be directed to the U.S. & U.K. delegates who were present at the Abuja talks. When I returned back from New York decisions have already been made so the UN signed as a witness. It was a peace agreement and a cease fire deal. Abdel-Wahid was asked to leave the room because he refused to sign. I did say that the agreement is a positive thing because clearly this is the only way to resolve the conflict. However I made it very clear from the beginning that if this agreement was seen as a finish rather than a step forward towards peace, then it would be a big mistake. During the weeks following the signing of the DPA many mistakes have been made by all parties to the conflict and the international community who assumed the agreement was the conclusion of the crisis. They labeled the non-signatories of the DPA as outlaws and threatened them with sanctions if they don’t sign. This attitude was adopted by the parties which signed the agreement along with the African Union (AU), US and UK. I warned them this is not the right way to follow up. As a result, the agreement became a splitting instrument rather than a politically binding one. Six weeks later I stated that the peace agreement was in disarray and gradually I raised my voice telling the parties that if they continue along this path there would not be a peace agreement anymore. The government and Minni Minnawi had no political will to bring the non-signatories on board but rather bombed and attacked them. These attacks were not in line with the spirit of the DPA. Pronk : Absolutely, and I emphasized this in all my press conferences that if you read the text of the DPA it is not a bad one from an institutional or legal perspective. That being said it was not a politically viable agreement because it between the government and a single rebel faction. The non-signatories were labeled as outlaws and they were being bombed. This resulted in a situation where the constituencies of Abdel Wahid rejected the DPA because they believed it was being used as tool to attack them. Gradually the DPA became paralyzed, near dead. I used a stronger term coma, to describe the DPA because the first few months the DPA did not function anymore. The UNSC has issued a communique saying that the DPA should the basis for the peace in Darfur. The Sudanese government is insisting that the agreement would not be changed and that the non-signatories have to accept it as is. Pronk : This is a power statement not a political one. The government can insist all it wants but if the other parties don’t agree then the DPA will not function. You can bomb and attack the non-signatories or use the Jinjaweed militias against them, which was the case. The mistake of some western countries is that they legitimized these attacks as a way to implement the DPA through calling the non-signatories outlaws or terrorists which encouraged the Sudanese government to attack their positions. As a result the DPA ended up pushing the peace away. It could have been different if at the outset all parties were admitted to the DPA institutions such as the ceasefire commission. Any ceasefire agreement needs to have a very strong and efficient commission and for that all parties should be present or else you can’t resolve ceasefire violations. The non-signatories were not allowed to join this commission which meant that they could be attacked and not have their voices heard. Pronk : I am concerned that this may happen even though it shouldn’t. I personally see that peace in the South is strongly linked to the peace in Darfur. When you have an ongoing war in a major part of the country then the unity of Sudan is at stake. The CPA may not collapse but it may result in a situation where Southerners will vote against unity because they have no confidence in the Khartoum government. This in my view, would legally be acceptable but will not be good for Sudan as a whole and a reason to return to war. If there is no peace in Darfur then there will be no confidence in the government since the southerners will blame them for the attacks on their fellow citizens in Darfur. They will take their own decisions of becoming independent as they don’t want to run the risk of being attacked in the same manner so it ends up being a vicious circle. The only way to avoid this is to have peace in Darfur as soon as possible. This is what the international community should understand ; if they want to have peace in the North East part of Africa then Darfur is the key to that. Given the fact that you have voiced all these concerns to the UNSC yet the latter has been almost ineffective in trying to resolve the Darfur crisis. You have mentioned in one of your press conferences that the UNSC is not taking itself seriously. Pronk : I don’t know. I can offer a number of explanations but they will remain speculations. Perhaps they are busy with other issues such as the situation in the Middle East or they are too divided amongst themselves. It is also possible that they are underestimating the scope of the crisis. I personally think that it is a combination of all these reasons. Every time the rebel groups convene in an area and discuss uniting their ranks the Sudanese government bombs these areas. Pronk : Unfortunately the Sudanese government does not fear international reaction since any bombing raids or Jinjwaeed attacks are violations of UNSC resolutions and even the DPA. The Sudanese government knows that they can violate the terms of these agreements without fearing any repercussions from the international community. The Sudanese government became determined to pursue a military victory. One example of is that when the rebel groups make promises to refrain from initiating attacks, the Sudanese government bombs them. The other explanation I can think of is that these attacks are carried out by other forces in Khartoum such as the army. Pronk : This is possible. No one knows exactly where the power lies. However if the second explanation is true that then this means that those who are politically in power would be more trustworthy because these forces are making life difficult for them but then they should be more open and ask the international community for help against those forces in Sudan that aim to destabilize the South as well as Darfur. As long as they don’t do so they are responsible. You made frequent references to ‘the forces’ that are obstructing peace in the South and seeking a military solution to the Darfur crisis. Pronk : I am not mentioning names but we all know that there are some groups in Khartoum that never liked the CPA and in turn blamed al-Bashir and his 2nd Vice president Ali Osman Taha for what they thought to be too many concessions made. These groups in my view they are the ones behind the attempts to destabilize the south by arming some militias. There could be economic forces behind it linked to oil or it could just be traditional political forces who want to have a strong huge big Sudan or simply more conservative Islamists. It could be a combination of all that. There are similar forces who are trying to keep Darfur under control for economic reasons. I think you will find these forces in the army but not the army as a whole ; in the National Congress Party but not the NCP as a whole. You will also find them in National Security but not the apparatus as a whole. It is very vague and I do not think that President himself is behind it. I mentioned before that he allows it and may close his eyes in order to stay in power but these forces are quite strong. Pronk : I suppose that this part of the game. I think these are the same forces that are sidelining the UN and making life very difficult for their staff. The UN is much more under pressure than it was before I was ousted. I was standing up for my people when I was there but at the moment who is standing up for the UNMIS ? The attack on the UN compound in Nyala for instance is a shame since no one said anything against it. The Sudanese government can make life very difficult. This is intimidation and harassment and could go on even further. Pronk : Yes. This is a deliberate action to undermine the UN role in Sudan. I have stood up for my staff and defended them when I was there. The UN mission in Sudan (UNMIS) has been beheaded and the current leadership is officially in charge but in reality they are handling more of the managerial aspect of the peace agreement and they are not backed by New York. I blame New York for not backing its own mission and instead accommodating the power elites in Khartoum. The awful thing is that you are sending thousands of people to Sudan and let them swim on their own. They are in a very difficult situation. The staff in Sudan is part of our overall operations. This includes human rights monitors, aid workers, NGO’s, UNHCR, UNDP, UNMIS and various agencies. They are not backed by their capitals or UNSC. Pronk : I am referring to the administration of the UN as well as the UNSC. If you send a mission then you have to support them. Currently there is no adequate political backing. Pronk : I made it very clear publicly in interviews and more recently on ‘Hardtalk’ that Kofi Annan has done everything in his power and that he personally backed the UNMIS. I did not blame Annan. You blamed his office for not following up on your expulsion. Pronk : I have consistently said that it’s not important whether they back me or not. What is important is that they allowed a decision take place without addressing it which means that the Sudanese government is led to believe that they can go ahead and do what they please. The UNMIS is becoming less effective because the Sudanese government making life difficult for them. Never before did we have so many relocations and evacuations of humanitarian operations in Darfur. Pronk : I don’t know. Akol is a very clever and strong diplomat but I don’t know the political power structure within the government of national unity. I only know that the SPLM was not in agreement with the decision to expel me. Pronk : That is the question that you need to direct to him. I have my own analysis that is merely guessing. The fact remains that he has signed the decision considering me Persona non grata on behalf of the government of national unity. Pronk : No there is nothing personal. He is a clever politician and I am a clever politician. We did have difference in opinions. At a certain moment he reached a certain decision. He has the right to do so as Sudan’s foreign minister. This decision however was a violation of the agreement with the UN establishing the UNMIS. However it’s up to the UNSC to address that. Pronk : I think he has been misinformed and manipulated by some people who are part of the forces I mentioned before. The government is dependent on many power groups of different positions. Al-Bashir has to balance and accommodate these powers to keep the regime stable. Al-Bashir has to put the negative views from these groups into consideration. He has come to the conclusion that he has to weigh two risks ; the risk of allowing the UN into Darfur or rejecting them. If he chose the latter then he risks sanctions and diplomatic isolation. If he complies then he runs into the risk of an internal power strife and domestic turmoil. Al-Bashir has weighed these risks and determined that the second risk is higher because the first risk is practically non-existent. The UNSC is becoming all talk ; making powerful statements and passing resolutions with no follow up. They receive a report that the agreements are not honored so then they ask for another report, so at the end of the day the only risk that exists for Khartoum is the domestic one. Al-Bashir, being a politician took a rational decision based on his analysis of the risks involved and the power structure within his ranks. Pronk : Correct. This is what I said before. The New York Times met with a number of Sudanese soldiers in Chad and apparently what they said confirms what you mentioned in your blog about the low morale of the Sudanese army fighting in Darfur and retreating which lead to losses by the army and for sure the army leadership knows that. Pronk : One of the ‘mistakes’ of the government, and this is a soft description of what it really is, that they armed the Arab militias against the rebels. They didn’t use the army because there were too many Darfurians in their ranks who did not want to fight their own people. The government took the very wrong decision to arm the Arab militias known as the Jinjaweed. The Sudanese army is disciplined and I had regular contacts with them. It is a well organized and disciplined and up to a point respect international law and human rights. However they are not strong enough to fight the war in Darfur so they resorted to the same tactics that was used by the government in 80’s of deploying militias to fight the southern rebels when the army was not winning the war. The forces that are looking for a military victory are using paramilitary forces. By the way let me add that there are also Chadian forces in Darfur. Pronk : Definitely however I don’t say the Sudanese government but forces within them. I don’t even accuse al- Bashir even though he allows them to do so. It’s a conglomerate of power containing forces which can carry out those activities, but it is not a decision by al-Bashir. He assured me that they are not doing it and I trust him but it is being done and weapons are provided to these militias. Al-Bashir told me before that he instructed his commanders not to bomb areas in Darfur and I believe him but the aerial bombardment is continuing. Pronk : This is a current event but I was speaking of discussions I had with him last year. The forces I refer to are very strongly relying on paramilitary units. The PDF, Jinjaweed are very clever in the way they incorporate these forces. The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has announced his intention to file his first case before the judges this month. Pronk : I think it would help. Pronk : Yes because they have had their chance. In August 2004 I told them that if you don’t want to have international legal proceedings then show that you are serious and do it your self and start your own proceedings in the national courts. What happened is that they have created something which was not serious. The courts which they established are only indicting low-ranked people not the real masterminds of the atrocities. They have shown that they can do it if they wanted to, but perhaps they unable or unwilling to do so due to the conglomerate of powers I described. It should now be handled by the International Criminal Court. Pronk : If that happens then it becomes part of a political deal and I don’t think the UN can subscribe to that. I don’t believe in such a deal which will be between the government of Sudan and people abroad, but who is speaking for the victims and all these refugees who lost their family members in this war ? You cannot have such a deal. What you can have is peace first and then justice. But in no way can you accept a deal exonerating those who are guilty. During the Nairobi peace talks between the Sudanese government and SPLM the issue of immunity was discussed to those responsible for the killings during the 21 years war between the north & the south. Both parties decided that they don’t want to talk about it. You will not find anything in the CPA on that which means there is no impunity. If anyone wants to raise this issue they can do so. It is up to the Sudanese to make that decision and the international community cannot do that on their behalf. You have been in Sudan for quite some time. Pronk : You have said that I was bitter which is not true. I loved the country and the people. I have been visiting Sudan during the early 70’s. Sudan has a very special place in my heart. I took the decision at the time to start an aid program to Sudan after the Addis Ababa agreement in 1972. The following year I became the Dutch Minster for development and determined that Sudan deserves assistance so I went there and I spoke with President Nimeiri. I told him that we want to be partners since he took a bold step by making peace in the south and provide aid half to the North and the other half to the South. I went to the South and had contacts with Vice President Abel Alier. We were involved in a number of projects such as the Juba University, bridges in Juba and the Jongeli Canal. In the 1990s I maintained contacts with president al-Bashir and late Jon Garang. I was the one who started the groups of friends of Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to give support to the peace process in the region from outside. I know the situation inside out and have been there very often so I feel I am friend of the Sudanese people. It is true that there are atrocities committed in Sudan and there are people responsible who I blame for it, but this doesn’t mean that I don’t feel myself a friend of the country and its people. Pronk : If I have time I will do that but I intend to be politically active and whatever I can do I want to continue doing rather than wasting time looking backwards. Memoirs are interesting but they are vehicle to look backward and I want to look forward. I have my notes and I will continue writing but at the same time I want to be active. A number of area businesses, organizations and college clubs have already signed up for the event, in which they will set up tables with information, involvement opportunities and promotional items for visiting students. “The Campus Bash helps students get connected with student organizations and helps them find involvement opportunities,” said Shawn Rawson, the event’s organizer. Held twice a year, Campus Bash was started more than a decade ago to give local businesses and clubs a venue to promote themselves to the SMC population, Rawson said. She said previous campus bashes have drawn crowds as large as 1,000. “It’s one of the most well-attended student activities we have,” Rawson said. “We always gain a lot of traction from students. Campus Bash organizers have other surprises in store for visitors this year, including free food and beverages, variety acts and music provided by a guest DJ. “It’s basically a huge party,” Rawson said. New to this year’s bash is a 20-foot stunt jump platform, which students can vault off, landing on a giant inflatable cushion below. This year, the bash has seen more signups from local businesses than ever before, Rawson said. Some of the organizations that will be participating this year include Sew Can You Fashion Design School, the Cass County COA and the United Way. The number of participating businesses reflects the increased cooperation between the city and the college in recent years, after the two worked together to bring the Dowagiac Area History Museum to its new home downtown, Rawson said. “I’ve lived in Dowagiac all my life, so I get excited about the fact that so many local businesses are getting involved with the college,” Rawson said. “The college is a big time entity in Dowagiac, and it’s great to see us working together with the community to get students more involved. Whether or not students decide to sign up for a new club or learn more about volunteer positions with organizations such as the Salvation Army, the amount of activities and the sheer size of the crowd makes the event worth checking out, Rawson said. “If you’re looking for an opportunity for some fun and want to learn how to get connected with the community and the college, and you want a free bite to eat as well, please come out to the bash,” Rawson said. The Fore Street venue will be hosting the all-day festival showcasing bands, acoustic artists and DJs. The event will have an exotic theme, kicking off the summer by launching the pub’s “tac/trop” – tacky and tropical – garden, adorned with pink flamingos and palm trees. The one-day festival follows on from the pub’s hugely successful Love Music nights every Thursday which has featured acts such as Tank Trap, Whinnie Williams, The Broken Chords, The Twirling Canes and norther rockers Proud Mary – who recently supported Paul Weller on tour. “We’ve got a really good following,” said owner Ricky Harding. “We did live music nights at the coffee shop as well. “Music nights there were madness, it was amazing. “We hit the capacity of people in there. “With Love Music nights are more organised – in the shop it used to be a bit punk. Manager Sam Ring said: “It was like a house party in there, here it’s a gig. “There are some really good bands. “No-one was really doing live music in the town,” said Ricky. “We’ve got a reputation of putting these great events – that’s what got us this place really. “People noticed us in town for the right and the wrong reasons. “This place needed a new lease of life. The event on Easter Sunday (April 20) starts at 2pm and runs until late, with a stage set up in the garden for bands while acoustic acts will perform in the front of the pub. And to get in the mood for summer there will be a barbecue and a camper van bar outside. “It’s going to be good,” said Ricky. The pub is also launching its new Bingo and Wings night on Tuesday April 16, joining a revival the traditional game has seen in recent months. “We’ve got a retro bingo machine,” said Ricky. “It’s something to do in the pub. “The people we get in here are from 20 years old to 80 years old – it’s such a mix of people. “You can’t sit there and expect people to turn up – you need to give them a reason to come, and try to make it the best night they’ve ever had. Lakers unable to handle Kings’ Gay, McCallum

Rudy Gay scored nine of his 31 points in the fourth quarter and McCallum had a career-high 27 points to help the Sacramento Kings beat the Lakers 107-102 on Wednesday night. McCallum, the 36th overall pick in the 2013 draft, spent the majority of his rookie season with little court time, other than some strong performances in the D-League. But McCallum, who has started the last five games due to the deep quadriceps injury to Isaiah Thomas, has played like a savvy veteran point guard of late. Against the Lakers, McCallum made 12 of 22 shots and added five assists and four rebounds in 46 minutes. With McCallum directing the offense, the Kings only committed eight turnovers, three by the poised rookie. “Every time I think he can’t get any better he finds a way to prove me wrong,” Kings coach Michael Malone said. “The biggest thing that impresses me isn’t his scoring or his assists. It’s his demeanor, his composure, and his poise. McCallum had 22 points and 10 assists Monday in a victory at New Orleans. “Sometimes in this league the opportunity only comes once,” said McCallum, who played three seasons at the University of Detroit where he was coached by his father, Ray McCallum Sr. “I’m trying to take advantage of it. The game is definitely slowing down and I’m getting more comfortable. There’s nothing comfortable regarding the Lakers right now. It was one more game where they played with a depleted roster. Missing the game were Pau Gasol (vertigo), Steve Nash (ankle), Chris Kaman (calf) and Xaiver Henry (multiple injuries). Los Angeles lost its second straight and fourth in five games. The Lakers, losers of six straight road games, are 11-27 away from home this season. The Lakers (25-50) are experiencing only their eighth losing season since moving west from Minneapolis in 1960. They are on pace to have their worst record in the Los Angeles era. The last time the Lakers had 50 or more losses was 1974-75 (30-52). “We’ve had a tough (road) trip. But there were a lot of opportunities for a lot of our guys,” Lakers coach Mike D’Antonio said. “They should be taking these opportunities to get better and try to get some wins. Jodie Meeks scored 21 points and Jordan Hill had 18 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out late in the fourth quarter for the Lakers. Nick Young, had 17 points and Kent Bazemore added 14. ARMAS Associated Press(0) CommentsMILWAUKEE — The stops on Bo Ryan’s coaching resume sound like a road trip across southern Wisconsin, from Platteville to Milwaukee to Madison. He has been pacing sidelines for so long in this state, it’s hard to imagine Ryan being anywhere but the Midwest. His roots, though, run deep in the East. The Badgers under Ryan are inextricably linked to the sidewalks and basketball courts of the Philadelphia suburb of Chester, Pa., where the 66-year-old Ryan grew up and starred as a point guard in high school. Those ties are especially prominent in Wisconsin’s run to the Final Four after the death of Ryan’s father, Butch, a longtime youth baseball and basketball coach who passed away last summer. “He was always about the kids that he helped mentor growing up, and you know, that’s why I do it,” Ryan said after Wisconsin beat Arizona 64-63 in overtime to advance to a Final Four matchup with Kentucky on Saturday. “Today would have been my dad’s 90th birthday,” Ryan said after the win over the Wildcats. No one would blame Ryan for showing cracks in his often stoic facade. Spend enough time with him and maybe he’ll even tell a story from his upbringing, complete with a tinge of a Philly accent that makes it feel as if he’s holding court on a stoop. Ryan once said growing up on the streets of Chester steeled him in life, to the point where it was hard to get him to the point “where you feel you have no hope.” The Ryan family lived in a row house; the elder Ryan, a decorated World War II veteran, worked as a pipe fitter. The experiences helped influence how Ryan coaches. His father passed along a tireless work ethic that Ryan has displayed working his way up the coaching ladder. And if you see that reflected in his teams, there’s a reason. “That mental toughness, don’t let anything get past you,” Milwaukee assistant Sharif Chambliss — a St. Catherine’s High School graduate — said in describing the influence of Ryan’s roots. A former player under Ryan, Chambliss grew up in Racine, a Wisconsin city that reminds him of Chester. Ryan was an assistant basketball coach and head baseball coach at Dominican College in Racine. A 12-point halftime deficit, like the one overcome by Wisconsin against Oregon in the regional semifinals, doesn’t seem insurmountable. A 1-5 stretch like the one Wisconsin went through at midyear doesn’t mean the season is lost. “Getting the most out of each guy — coach is going to take those guys who are tough and just get the most out of them,” Chambliss said. Ryan’s coaching career started in 1972 at Brookhaven High School in Delaware County, Pa. He arrived in the Midwest for good in 1976 when he was hired as an assistant at Wisconsin. The first head coaching job came at Division III UW-Platteville, where his successful 15-year run began in 1984. Two years at UW-Milwaukee followed before Ryan got the job at the Wisconsin system’s main campus in Madison in 2001. While Ryan traded in cheesesteaks for cheeseheads decades ago, he’s never stopped talking about Chester. “Oh, I’ve heard every story over the last 21 years. Some of them eight or 10 times,” Wisconsin associate head coach Greg Gard said. As Gard understands it, Chester has had tough economic times. But it’s also a scholastic basketball power in Pennsylvania, a point of pride likely shared last week by Ryan and a fellow alumnus, Arizona freshman forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. Ryan is “very tough-minded. And I think that whole thing in terms of street toughness, the understanding that there’s an appreciation for what you have. The willingness to never quit, never give up,” Gard said. “He came from a family that had limited resources financially, so you have an appreciation for what it takes; what hard work really is. No shortcuts at Wisconsin. One of the team’s tasks during an offseason training regimen is to run a steep and grassy hill at a park in Madison. Unless you’re hurt, you go — one round-trip for each game on the schedule. It’s a point of pride for the players after it’s over. Penn State coach Patrick Chambers, who is from just outside Philadelphia, has to coach against Ryan’s team every season in the Big Ten. They’ve grown closer since Chambers arrived in the league in 2011 since the two spend summer vacations near each other on the New Jersey coast. Chambers is familiar with the Chester attitude. He sees it passed on to the Badgers. “They’re cocky, they’re confident, but not overconfident,” Chambers said. “They are very confident in who they are, and they know who they’re not. A A A Email The smog-like conditions which brought a haze to swathes of Britain will become even more frequent as diesel car ownership soars, a leading pollution expert has warned. Diesel engine emissions pose the single greatest public health challenge for UK cities in the years to come, claims Timothy Baker of King’s College London. Asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema sufferers complained of breathing problems, with air pollution reaching “high” levels in rural areas of the South-east and East Anglia. The pollution, which is forecast to remain until Friday, is a mix of traffic and power station emissions and dust from the Sahara. Some schoolchildren in London were kept indoors at lunchtime to avoid them having asthma attacks and potentially life-long lung damage. Professor Frank Kelly, a Government adviser, urged other schools in affected areas to do the same. “As a general response this is a good approach as children tend to run around outside and therefore breathe deeper,” he said. Dr Keith Prowse, the honorary medical adviser to the British Lung Foundation, warned those who suffer from asthma to stay indoors and said going running would be “sheer stupidity” while pollution levels remained high. He added that the effects of the Saharan dust storm, which exacerbated the pollution, are likely to persist for days. Mr Baker, deputy manager of MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health, warned that the growing popularity of diesel cars will push air pollution levels even higher. To make matters worse, diesel fumes have been found to have a role in causing cancer. “The way things are going, pollution levels are likely to rise in the coming months and years. Traffic emissions are a big and growing problem in the UK because of the dramatic increase in diesel cars in the last few years,” Mr Baker told The Independent. “This is one of the big challenges in the years to come for public health and, within the urban environment, it’s probably the biggest challenge. Sales of diesel cars recently overtook petrol engines, accounting for 51 per cent of new cars bought, compared to just 14 per cent in 2000. Drivers seek these vehicles because they are cheaper to run and emit less carbon dioxide, but the fine particles created by the engines pose huge health risks, he said. Pollution levels hit the highest ranking of 10 on the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affair’s index in Norfolk and much of East Anglia. When pollution hits this level people are advised to “ reduce physical exertion, particularly outdoors, especially if you experience symptoms such as sore eyes, cough or sore throat”. Paula Browne, a Norfolk-based NHS respiratory nurse adviser, said people with breathing conditions had reported difficulties earlier in the week before pollution levels made headline news. “We had quite a few people saying that they hadn’t felt that good but they couldn’t put their finger on why because the weather had been nice. But they said it made sense when they woke up to see the high pollution levels,” she said. Ms Browne said people suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases such as emphysema and bronchitis were the worst affected. They typically feel short of breath when the weather is very hot, windy, damp or wet – none of which was the case earlier this week. “I don’t know if the full effects of the pollution will be felt for several days yet. I wouldn’t be surprised if people were more affected at the weekend because the inflammation can take time,” she added. A spokesman for the environment department said that the pollution level today is likely to remain “high to moderate” across much of the South-east, Midlands and East Anglia but should ebb away by Friday. This week’s pollution is caused by a combination of dust blown in from the Sahara, as well as harmful emissions, largely from car exhausts and power plants, from the UK and Europe. Light winds have allowed this cocktail of natural and manmade pollutants to linger in the skies above the country. The haze contains pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and ozone. It can cause runny eyes and noses, as well as coughs and sore throats, but the effects can be more serious among the very young, the elderly and those with heart or lung problems. It can also be carcinogenic. The pollution has left a layer of orange dust on cars as the rain clears it from the upper atmosphere and brings it down to lower levels. The Defra Daily Air Quality Index, which hit the top level of 10 yesterday in parts of East Anglia and the South-east, is calculated by measuring pollutants – ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and tiny particulate matter, known as PM10 and PM2.5. Each pollutant is measured in a different way. For example, ozone is measured by shining UV light through air. Poor Fit Makes James Expendable for 49ers

CommentsAfter two underwhelming seasons in the Bay Area, running back LaMichael James may have played his last down as a member of the San Francisco 49ers. Ever since he was drafted in the second round of the 2012 draft, pundits questioned his fit in offensive coordinator Greg Roman’s offense. The questions are warranted based on the fact the Niners have been reluctant to use James in any capacity. Here’s what 49ers beat reporter Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com had to say about James’ fit at the conclusion of the 2013 season: “James certainly does not appear to be a good fit with the 49ers, who are built to be a power-running team. The 49ers do not believe James has the kind of blazing speed to succeed as solely an outside runner. If that truly is the case, why did San Francisco draft him in the first place? It’s not like the 49ers were going to build their offense around James. Frank Gore was coming off of a 1,200-yard season, and the team had just made an appearance in the NFC Championship Game. As far as I can tell, James was drafted to be a change-of-pace back who could effectively create mismatches out of the backfield. The only problem is the 49ers have been reluctant to give him the chance to properly utilize his skill set on Sundays. According to the analysts at Pro Football Focus (subscription required), James has only logged 137 offensive snaps in two seasons (playoffs included). That is by far the lowest snap count of any running back who was drafted in the first three rounds of the 2012 draft. Trent Richardson, Doug Martin, David Wilson, Isaiah Pead, Ronnie Hillman and Bernard Pierce have all logged more snaps than James. That’s a travesty when one takes the time to examine general manager Trent Baalke’s comments prior to the 2013 season, per Maiocco of CSNBayArea. I'm a big believer -- we are big believers -- in a three-headed approach. In other words, having a group of backs that bring to the table something a little bit different than the other one so you can do a lot of different things. But also having those backs be able to do enough things the same so you don't become so predictable on game day. Despite Baalke's remarks, there seems to be a bit of a disconnect between the general manager and the head coach. Ross D. Franklin Bleacher Report's Dylan DeSimone told me that he believes head coach Jim Harbaugh didn’t want anything to do with James: “James was 100 percent a Baalke pick, which is odd because you'd think Harbaugh would adore him, having been ripped by him when James was at Oregon and Harbaugh at Stanford. DeSimone is right: You would think Harbaugh would value him. In two games versus Harbaugh at the collegiate level, James rushed for 382 yards and scored four touchdowns. Yet, if we know anything about Harbaugh, he marches to the beat of his own drum. Even though Baalke drafted James, it’s clear Harbaugh instructed the coaching staff to work Gore into the ground. Why? Because Gore amassed more snaps and carries than he did in 2012. #49ers are 27-7 when RB Frank Gore eclipses the 100-yd. mark, and 33-7-1 when he carries the ball 20 times or more. If the 49ers were sincerely going for a three-headed approach in 2013, Gore would have had fewer carries and James would have played more snaps than he did in 2012. But that simply wasn’t the case. James averaged 3.2 offensive snaps a game in 2013 and 14.4 offensive snaps a game in 2012. That’s a significant drop-off. DeSimone feels Roman incorporates the star players whom he trusts more: "He [Roman] has not incorporated a single role player that wasn't a star in three years. Every player that excels, excels because they were a first-round pick. "He hasn't guided any auxiliary players in the right direction or created a role for them. James, with his unique skill set, could've had a tremendous role in the read-option and as a bailout for the often pressured Colin Kaepernick. Instead of having that tremendous role in the read-option, James was relegated to situational return duties. Over the course of 10 regular-season games, he fielded 23 punts for 251 yards and 12 kickoffs for 321 yards. By no means were the numbers mind-blowing, yet they did garner high marks from the folks at PFF. He received a plus-2.8 kickoff return grade and a plus-1.4 punt return grade. Surely, James would have liked to have had a bigger role outside of his special teams contributions, but there’s no getting around the fact that he doesn’t fit San Francisco’s plan of attack on offense. He’s an outside runner who hasn’t earned the trust of the staff to bang between the tackles. Is that his fault? No. Everybody (Harbaugh, Roman and Baalke) is at fault for his ineffective nature. James being stuck in this particular situation is not his fault. He had absolutely no say as to where he went on draft day. Who knows? He could have went to a team that featured him as a pass-catcher out of the backfield and thrived. We haven't seen enough of him to know what type of player he is at the NFL level. The only thing we do know is that James’ horrendous fit in Roman’s offense makes him expendable. Odds are he won’t be cut because of his lofty draft status, but he could end up being a sweetener in a draft-day trade if the 49ers try to move up to secure a player they like on Day 1 or Day 2. Return to God’s beginning

God remembersPhoto credit: centerpointbibleinstitute. “Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘I am returning to Jerusalem with mercy; My house shall be built in it,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘and a surveyor’s line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem. Approximately one year ago, the Lord took me on a fourteen-day journey in the Book of Zechariah. I cannot begin to articulate how God met me, ministered to me, and brought me to a new place of tender intimacy with and in Him. Zechariah breathes new life into God's love for us; and why we love God because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). We are our Father's inheritance, the apple of His eye. Do you want God's love to capture your heart and lead you to an even deeper devotion to Him? Then devote the next 14 days to meeting your Most Tender and Loving Father in the Book of Zechariah. I was drawn to the “surveyor’s line” in this verse, as it lit up before my spiritual eyes. For me, this entire verse builds out ward from this line. This revelation will become apparent, as the Great Surveyor unlocks the mystery contained within His ancient Word, which is also a right-now Word for us today. The Hebrew word for “returning” as used in this verse is shuwb (pr. shoob), and means “return to the starting point” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). This has amazing and profound significance because the Hebrew name of Jerusalem (Yeruwshalaim, pr. Yer-oo-shaw-lah-im) means “the true pointing, founded peace.” The capital city was named Jerusalem, because its people were God’s originally-chosen people (and still God’s chosen people today). Since Jesus’ birth, all people who receive Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior are counted among The Holy Father’s chosen people. The Word of God tells us that the message went from the Jews to the Gentiles (Acts 18:6), meaning that the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ was made available to all people, regardless of ancestry or origin. God was returning to the starting point of His true pointing. Not just any starting point, but His true point; which was the point before time began, when the Perfect Creator spoke His intent into existence and the “In the beginning…” was formed and made manifest (Genesis). It was here that God was returning to His intent, and restoring His people to who He originally intended them to be, us to be. Who God restores, He protects. God’s protection is woven into and surrounds His restoration. God’s “mercy” used here is His racham (pr. rakh-am), which is His “compassion (in the plural), the womb (as cherishing the fetus), tender love.” God’s compassion has to be plural, because He is a Triune God: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:26, Matthew 28:19, Mark 1:9-11). God is restoring His people of yesterday, today, and tomorrow, back to His intent for them. Since God is outside of time, tomorrow is already God’s yesterday. The past, present, and future all intersect at God’s one true point when He made His intent manifest by speaking it into existence. The Great Beginning declares in Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” The psalmist King David points to this truth, as he testifies “For you [God] created my innermost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb” (Psalm 139:13). The womb was and is intended by God Himself to be a place of creation, restoration, and great protection; and the ungodly act of abortion was to have no place in this sacred space. Abortion is of the devil. It is foul, and comes to steal, kill, and destroy. The devil is a thief who comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). I had no intention of going here, but God Himself spoke this strong Word of Truth through me as I was typing His message. The “line” (qav, pr. kawv) that our Merciful and Loving Father is stretching forth is a “cord (as connecting), a measuring cord (as if binding), a fastening. The Father “stretches forth” (natah yatsa, pr. naw-taw yaw-tsaw) His cord. He is “pitching, spreading out” His protection of connection; and therefore, His mercy is “bringing and breaking us out, and carrying us out. Are you ready to come out of that false identity that the devil crippled you with, and be reconnected and restored to your Loving Father, my brother? Will you allow your Daddy to carry you out of your tired and broken-down life, my sister? Then grab hold of your Father’s umbilical cord, as He begins to reattach Himself to you, and return and restore you to your rightful place, which is found in His beginning. Father, thank You for returning to us with Your mercy. Thank you for restoring us to who You called us to be, to whom You intended for us to be in You. We call on You now to break off of us the false guard that the devil and the world has placed upon us, and to let You in completely. Perform that restoration work in us and in our lives that You have been yearning to do. In Jesus Name, we thank You that we are now walking in Your identity, plan, purpose, and destiny that You spoke into us in the beginning. Amen and Amen. Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to go back to the beginning in and with God each and every day. Choose to seek the Lord throughout the day, and spend time with Him in His Word. Choose to decree and declare God’s Word over you and your life. If you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I encourage you to do it today, right now, by saying this prayer out loud: “Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I am sorry. I truly desire to be saved and reconciled back to God, my Father, through You. I receive Your sinless Blood as payment in full for my sins—past, present, and future. I now call You my Lord and Savior, and invite You to live within my heart, and to permanently live within me. I make You Lord over me and over my life from this moment on. Amen. God tells us that we are blessed to be a blessing (Genesis 12:2). Be a blessing to someone by sending them this word of encouragement. If God did not already put someone in your spirit and on your heart that needs to read this uplifting message from above, simply ask your Heavenly Father who to bless on today. The pub had been closed closed for six weeks whilst the refurbishment was carried out. Inside, the Red Lion has been completed redecorated with new flooring, fixtures and fittings. It also features separate zones, including a new dining area with semi-private feature booths, available for hire or watching sporting events. The pub will also be launching a new menu featuring home cooked food incorporating local produce and a charcoal grill menu. Themed food nights will also take place throughout the week. Michelle, who took on the pub in December, said: “The pub looks fantastic and I can’t believe the transformation. We also have a fabulous beer garden and will also be offering Sky Sports and BT Sport so customers can always catch the biggest matches. “The investment will allow us to offer something for everyone and cater for families, ultimately providing a pub Lowton can be proud of. “The team and I look forward to the reopening and welcoming some old and new faces back to the pub to celebrate the new look with us. Punch Taverns’ partnership development manager, John Auld, added: “It’s great that Punch can invest in our pubs and we essentially want to restore the Red Lion to its former glory, creating a leading community pub for local residents to enjoy great food and drink. “Everyone is really pleased with the transformation and I expect the launch night to be busy with local residents eager to see the pub’s new look. IDFCThe Reserve Bank of India has granted an in-principle nod for banking licence to IDFC . The “in-principle” approval will be valid for a period of 18 months during which the applicant has to comply with the requirements under the RBI guidelines. Welcoming the news, IDFC Executive Chairman Rajiv Lall said that their goal is to build a ‘universal banking franchise’. He expects the company to comply with all RBI conditions. Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Lall said IDFC already has 21 percent Tier-1 capital and he believes it ‘will be the best capitalised start-up bank in India’. IDFC has 18 months to start banking operations. Elated by the news, Lall hopes to start working on the business restructuring as early as April 3. The company already has a detailed plan in place to kick start operations and wants to ‘get ready with branch network’. Lall said though the company is looking at organic growth entirely for the banking franchise, yet it would be premature to speak of its business model currently. He sees the lack of branches as an opportunity and not a constraint. Below is the transcript of Rajiv Lall’s interview with CNBC-TV18’s Shereen Bhan. Shereen: We don’t know exactly what the caveats or the conditions will be that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will finally put forward. A: It is not going to be easy, it is going to be hard work. However, we have a long-term perspective; I expect longer than most and therefore we believe that a banking franchise needs to be build deliberately, thoughtfully and brick by brick. So, we will get on with it. Shereen: Speaking of getting on with it banking operation will also require capital. A: That is one thing that we are not lacking. As IDFC today we already have 21 percent tier 1 capital. Since we will be executing our transition from a non-banking financial company (NBFC) to a bank, we will be the best capitalised start-up banks in India of the recent decades. Shereen: How soon will this process start? You talked about building this brick by brick but you have now got the in-principle nod from the RBI. A: We have 18 months to start operations. We have a very detailed plan of action to make us mission ready so to speak. So, that is what we will perceive. A: To be bank ready we have to be fully compliant with the regulations and that has aspects of legal structuring that needs to be taken care of; mostly just that. There is a transfer of assets that will have to happen. So, these are all boring things but they are time consuming and require focused execution. We will have to get ready for our branch network; all those kind of things we will have to start working on. A: We will start working on this tomorrow. The whole structure has to be compliant within 18 months. So, that has a number of legal steps that are involved because we are already a listed entity and our goal is to have a startup bank that will also be listed day one. So, that has a certain amount of process involved that we will have to now pursue. Shereen: You were taking us through the plans as far as the branch network is concerned. A: I will share that in the fullness of time. I am reluctant to unveil on my very first conversation about the contours of the business plan. However, needless to say it is our goal to build a universal banking franchise over time which will require us to build an appropriate branch network that goes with it. On April 03, 2014, IDFC closed at Rs 124.95, down Rs 3.05, or 2.38 percent. The 52-week high of the share was Rs 165.45 and the 52-week low was Rs 76.25. The company's trailing 12-month (TTM) EPS was at Rs 12.79 per share as per the quarter ended December 2013. The stock's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio was 9.77. The latest book value of the company is Rs 88.76 per share. At current value, the price-to-book value of the company is 1.41. 53084.35 -23.67 -0. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is located on the southeast corner of Chao Yang Gate, East Second Ring Road, Beijing. It covers an area of 61,000 square metres and has a floor-space of 128,600 square metres. The construction of the building began in June 1993 and was completed in July 1997. Looking from the exterior its grey convex structure gives expression to beauties of ancient Chinese architecture and provides yet an another tranquil setting and grandeur to the bustling metropolitan. Advanced means of modern property management is being applied to ensure the normal and efficient operation of the building. The Oliver Hall is the receiving hall of the Ministry. Its olive shape design projects the theme of peace. The hall occupies an area of 800 square metres. The ceiling is of stainless steel structure and glass dotted with lights to provide a natural and harmonious setting. On the soft coloured front wall is a huge relief "China Civilization" designed by the famous Chinese muralist Mr. Li Linzuo. The work exhibits the 5,000-year brilliant history of the Chinese nation. The mural spreads , from left to right in proper order, the Han Dynasty stone carving statue, the Tang Dynasty Skt. Lokapala statue, the ancient bronze articles, the Chin Dynasty terra cotta warriors, the drum of Chu Culture in the Warring States Period, the Zhou Dynasty bronze coiled dragon, the Han Dynasty jade wearings, the Song Dynasty astronomic graph and compass graph, the Yuan Dynasty rolling dragon, the Ming Dynasty treasure ship used in the Voyage Under Zheng He and the artistic patterns of Long March 2 clustered-on-rocket launch and "four modernization" drive which symbolize our science and technology development. A fine wood relief screen "the Riverside Scene at the Pure Moon Festival" stands facing the entrance in the hall. The picture of the screen is drawn from the well-known long rolling Chinese painting ":the Riverside Scene at the Pure Moon Festival" of the Painter Zhang Zeduan of Northern Song Dynasty. The wood relief version of "the Hong Qiao Bridge Market", a selection from the orginal painting, has been recreated by the senior craftsman Ma Guangjun in the wood carving process. The screen is 5.6 metres long and 3.1 metres in high. The picture itself on the screen is 4.6 metres in width and 1.58 metres in height. "The Bustling Hong Qiao Bridge Market", climax in "the Riverside Scene at the Pure Moon Festival", vividly describes the bustling scene of the business area of the time. The Hong Qiao Bridge is the centre of the picture . The wooden arch bridge , of great momentum and steadfastness , is a demonstration of the superb engineering skill of bridge construction during the Song Dynasty. Throng of people come and go on the bridge. On either side of the bridge stands a wooden column with a carved crane at the top. They are the memorial mark meant remind the emperors to be diligent in running state affairs and to love the people. On the right, a flotilla of merchant ships are braving against the current under the bridge. This breathtaking scene pushes the whole picture to its climax. The International Conference Hall occupies an area of 706 square metres with 671 seats. The infrared digital language transmission is also being adopted in the simultaneous interpretation system with good sound quality and security and with 6 languages in use at the time for the press. The amplifying loud-speaker system has dual proposes, one for conferences and the other for the performing arts. 3 tweeters and 2 woofers are behind the screen while 2 front speakers, the speakers for performers, the overhead speakers and the monitor speakers are also installed. 20 surround speakers are pre-installed in the walls for stereoscopic films show. The energy-saving star lights are introduced for the hall lighting while 4 sidelights, overhead lights and face lights have also been set up for the stage. The automatic separating and rising system is introduced for different layers of the stage curtain. The Foreign Ministry has 16 meeting and reception rooms which are used by leading members of the Ministry to meet and receive guests. Every rooms has a different unique decoration. In room 215 for example, a natural marble assembled mural "Wind Rising and Clouds Scudding" is hung on its east wall while the calligraphy work "Wishing Du Shaofu Bon Voyage on Assumption of His Office" by Mr. Shen Peng, Honorary President of China Calligraphy Association hangs on its west wall. Room 216 is another example, A huge Chinese painting by Mr. Wang Chengxi who is the Council Member of the Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Association hangs on its west wall while Comrade Mao Zedong's poem "Ode to Plum Blossom", to the Melody of Bu Suanzi in the calligraphy of Mr. Liu Bingsen who is the Standing Council Member of the Chinese Calligraphy Association, is decorated on its east wall. The Hall is an important venue for the Ministry's assembly, celebration, performance and meeting activities concerning the foreign affairs. The Hall for Negotiation sits on the ground floor. As its name goes, the hall is a place for diplomatic talks and the activities of the like. On the front wall of the hall, hangs a huge Chinese painting "the Beautiful Scenery of Yangshou, a work by the late well-known painter Li Keran. The flower bed is composed of a variety of bushes in the ministry's courtyard. It is also so arranged to look like a peace dove to project the theme of peace as the Hall of Olive. This is an obvious loss for the bank and I hope they tried to keep her; I feel like no amount of money or power is too much to give the person who invented credit default swaps and also did this. On the other hand if I had invented credit default swaps, I would just retire and spend my days telling war stories to financial journalists, HINT HINT HINT. Happy Google stock split day. I once thought I'd hacked Google's dual-class structure, which has a weird true-up next year if the two classes trade at different prices, but the final settlement seems to avoid my trick. So all you can do with Google's split into low-vote Class A and no-vote Class C stock, preserving its founders' majority voting control, is complain about the decline in modern corporate governance standards that started with Google. Also the S&P 500 now has 501 stocks in it. High-frequency trading leads to frequent code-stealing accusations. This one is about SXP Analytics, accused of stealing trading code from Quantlab Financial. As part of the case, "more than 70 Federal Bureau of Investigation agents raided SXP offices and employees' homes in seven states, seizing computers, servers and flash drives." So I know the FBI is supposedly looking into the problems of high-frequency trading, but I am skeptical that the FBI is the best agency to address the structural implications of high-frequency trading. They're definitely the best agency to kick down doors looking for stolen trading code, but that is not at all the same thing. The London vice-whale is okay with facing criminal charges. "A lawyer for a former JPMorgan Chase & Co trader accused of helping to hide trading losses tied to a $6.2 billion financial scandal said on Wednesday his client was open to leaving France to voluntarily face U.S. criminal charges," depending on what bail conditions are on offer. The conditions on offer include "facing criminal charges," though, so ... BofA's acquisition of Merrill Lynch was not pristine. I wouldn't go as far as Jesse Eisinger does here but, really, you shouldn't ask your shareholders to vote to approve a merger without telling them about billions of dollars of losses at the target company. I can't tell you the "right" penalty for doing that, but I could perhaps be persuaded that Ken Lewis's -- " a modest penalty, paid for by his former employer, and a temporary ban from an industry he is no longer a part of" -- is on the light side. The Cyprus bailout was great. Says Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who should know, since he's in charge of it as eurogroup president. He told people in Cyprus about how good the bailout was, noting that "If you lose 6 per cent of your economy in one year’s time, that is a very hard hit. But if you look at it in a more technocratic way, the programme is a success?." I'm sure that was very reassuring. Dijsselbloem should be good at this by now, "having made similar criticism-filled visits to Lisbon, Athens and Madrid since assuming the eurogroup presidency in January 2013. Distressed debt trading got harder. Because maybe you're not allowed to sell debt to hedge funds? Bankruptcy law is a weird beast because it seems to be made mostly by private lawyers but every so often intersects awkwardly with actual courts. The loan agreement looks to be pretty standard for anyone who has seen a few syndicated loan agreements. But it nonetheless seems to have thrown the federal courts in Washington State for a bit of a loop. So the court nixed a loan sale that seems pretty clearly to have been allowed under the terms of the agreement, throwing the borrower's bankruptcy case -- and quite possibly a lot of future bankruptcy cases -- into confusion. High-frequency trading is not like ... ... Superman III. Disneyland. Or "a dog running off with your sausages." However, a true national market system should enforce time priority across all venues. Things happen. "Can Robots Be Managers, Too?" "Open-toed rainboots." Subway "is within inches of" settling a lawsuit over how long a Footlong is. "Obamacare for the mortgage industry." SandRidge Energy: Sweet Spots And Duds Of The Mississippian Lime

The article provides well-by-well production data and analysis for SandRidge’s Mississippian wells within the company’s southern Comanche County focus area. The analysis indicates the presence of a unique gas-prone sweet spot that stands behind the prolific company-estimated 542 MBOE EUR for the area. The analysis also reveals poor well performance in other select areas, which indicates that acreage in those areas is uneconomic or marginal. In its recent Analyst Day presentation, SandRidge Energy (SD) provided informative discussion of its development strategy focused on select core areas within the company's massive 1.8-million acre position in the Mississippian. Within the focus areas, SandRidge currently has ~670,000 net acres under lease (of which ~180,000 will see expirations this year). The map below from the company's most recent investor presentation highlights these focus areas which include seven counties - Comanche, Barber, Harper and Sumner in Kansas and Woods, Alfalfa and Grant in Oklahoma. Within these seven counties, SandRidge categorizes its acreage into several broad areas in accordance with the EUR. (Average EUR figures shown on the map are for SandRidge's proved undeveloped locations booked at the end of 2013). The slide also summarizes key parameters of its year-end 2013 type curve which estimates average recovery per well across the entire PUD inventory at 118,000 barrels of oil, 64,000 barrels of NGLs and 1.2 Bcf of processed natural gas. A visible stand-out on the EUR map is the focus area which includes the southern half of Comanche County in Kansas. This area is assigned the highest PUD EUR: 542 MBoe per well versus 380 MBoe on average. A "deep dive" analysis of SandRidge's well performance in Comanche County helps to better understand the nature and economics of the company's drilling inventory in this operating area. The following sections present and discuss specific data by area. Key conclusions are summarized at the end of the article. Comanche County represents the second, after Harper County, most active drilling area for SandRidge in Kansas. I have reviewed performance of approximately 70 horizontal wells drilled by SandRidge in Comanche since 2011, which I believe captures the vast majority of the company's horizontal wells in the area for which data is available as of March 2014 (all production data is through November 2013). SandRidge's drilling activity in Comanche County has been concentrated around a relatively small number of focus areas. Within those areas, wells have been drilled mostly in "clusters" (part of the reason is the dependence on production infrastructure). As a result, a large portion of the company's acreage in the county remains unevaluated or under-evaluated. While infrastructure availability has a strong impact on how the acreage is being drilled out, another important factor that seems to drive the selection of new drillsites is existing prolific wells, both recent and legacy, that give reasons to expect repeat strong performance. The evaluation and development have been most active in the County's northwestern corner where SandRidge has brought on production over 40 horizontal wells since 2011. SandRidge has assigned a 237 MBoe EUR to its 2013 PUDs in the northern half of Comanche, which is substantially below the company-wide average. A detailed analysis of well performance in northern Comanche County and its correlation to the company's EUR guidance will be provided in my follow-up article. In southern Comanche, SandRidge has drilled most actively in what has proven to be a prolific natural gas sweet spot (where, as of November 2013, the company had brought on production at least 20 horizontals). Another evaluation area is located about ten miles to the east (where at least 9 operated horizontals were producing as of November 2013). Two years ago, SandRidge focused its attention on a prolific gas-producing legacy area in east-central Comanche (Collier Flats/Collier Flats East fields). In mid-2012, the company drilled a horizontal well, the Pepper 3419 1-4H, few miles to the east of the Collier Flats area. The well tested with a solid natural gas IP rate. With time, the Pepper well proved to be an outstanding gas producer (at least by the standards of the Mississippian), delivering 0.7 Bcf of high-Btu gas during the first 16 months. Cumulative oil production from the well was weak - just ~3,400 barrels during the same period (which probably was expected). Of note, the well's production ramped up slowly (the peak was reached during month 5) and, after dropping 75% from its peak, stabilized at an essentially flat rate of 0.7 MMcf/d during the last four months for which data was available. The Pepper 1-4H remains the strongest gas well among SandRidge's horizontals producing in this area. From mid-2012 through November 2013, SandRidge brought on production at least 20 horizontal Mississippian wells within the sweet spot' core and in its vicinity. The following graph shows cumulative natural gas production by well. Detailed production data for these wells is presented in the spreadsheet below. Averaging across the well sample, cumulative gas production for the first 12 months was ~340 MMcf per well. Oil represented approximately 8% of the cumulative BOEs produced, or approximately 4,500 barrels per well during the first 12 months. In contrast to the majority of other areas in the Mississippian play, drilling returns in this location are defined by natural gas EURs and gas price realizations, not by oil. Having analyzed production data for the 20 wells, it appears that the sweet spot's core is localized within a relatively small area (approximately one township in size). SandRidge's step-out wells - in the area marked as Tier I on the map below - have shown weaker performance relative to the wells within the core. SandRidge's production history in this area is still too short to make a reliable prediction of the decline trajectory. However, the company's 542 MBoe EUR estimate does not appear unreasonable based on the well data for the core area (but may be too high if applied to locations in Tier I). SandRidge did not provide oil EUR for this area. Based on my estimate, the oil EUR per well is low and is unlikely to exceed 20-25 MBo per well. Given SandRidge's relatively low D&C cots and infrastructure control in select areas, 542-MBoe PUD locations should be economic in a $4.50/MMBtu gas price environment, assuming a meaningful price uplift from the NGLs. However, drilling returns for such wells would be lower than what is implied by the company's 388 MBoe average type curve. As a result, despite the impressive "headline EUR," this area is unlikely to be top-ranking in the company's current drilling plan. Of note, lease ownership in the core of the gas-prone area appears highly fragmented (which is not a surprise given the area's prolific legacy production). While opportunities for lease consolidation may exist, lease acquisition costs would likely be higher than the average for the play, which will ultimately impact drilling economics. The highly productive sweet spot described above appears to be the only one that SandRidge has been able to delineate on its acreage in Comanche County so far. In other areas, unfortunately, the company's drilling results have been mostly disappointing. In the southern half of Comanche, SandRidge drilled nine horizontal wells located approximately 5-10 miles to the east from the gas sweet spot (the map below). Despite the proximity of the two areas, the nine eastern wells show radically different productivity and oil/gas mix: the wells are much "oilier" but a lot less prolific. Just as it was the case with the gas-prone area to the west, the drilling program here seems to have been triggered by the success of SandRidge's first horizontal test, the Sara 3317 1-34H. The well was brought on production in May 2012 and tested with a strong oil IP rate. The well produced 44,100 barrels of oil in the first 17 months through November 2013, which is an excellent result. Oil represented 65% of the well's cumulative production on a two-stream basis. SandRidge's map shows that the company has invested in production infrastructure in this area. Despite the success of the first well, the area did not live up to the initial expectation. The eight follow-up Mississippian horizontals did not come anywhere close to the first well in terms of production rates. The graph below shows cumulative oil production for the nine wells. On average during the first 12 months, they produced only about 10,000 barrels of oil, less than half of what is implied by SandRidge's updated 118 MBo oil type curve. If the original well is excluded as an outlier, the average for the remaining eight wells would be less than 8 MBo over the first year. After being online for less than two years, the majority of these eight wells are now essentially stripper wells and, in my estimate, are unlikely to produce more than 30 Mbo, on average, over their economic lives. In terms of gas volumes, the nine wells' performance was not much stronger, also tracking far below SandRidge's type curve. Cumulative gas production volumes are shown on the second graph below. Even if drilling & completing was the only cost of adding incremental wells (which is never the case), new drilling in this would still be hard to justify, based on these production data. It is no surprise that SandRidge has not drilled new wells in this area since October 2012 (the table below). Based on the maps provided by SandRidge in its presentations, the company has significant amount of undeveloped (and in many cases unevaluated) acreage in Comanche County. What is notable, after having drilled over 70 horizontal wells in the County, SandRidge's inventory of economically competitive drilling locations appears to be limited mostly to the singular, relatively small natural gas-prone area. In other areas, the company still needs to identify economically viable sweet spots via exploration. As a result, SandRidge is likely facing a difficult dilemma - to continue testing its acreage with a risk of new disappointments, or to limit its effort to the best delineated inventory only. While the latter approach would appear logical, given the technical challenges in the play, it potentially comes in conflict with the company's aggressive spending plan. SandRidge plans to drill 460 gross wells in the Midcontinent this year alone. At this pace, the company will quickly burn through its top-tier delineated development inventory and will again face the need to take on significant exploration risks. One minor observation is worth mentioning. The production data shown above indicate that, in few cases, infill wells have been less prolific than the initial producer that they offset. While this may reflect interference between adjacent wellbores, the statistical nature of the fractured carbonate may also be at play. Even over very short distances, performance correlation between wells may break down, without obvious reasons. In other words, even if the well is drilled right next to an existing prolific producer, there is no guarantee that such well will also perform strongly. It appears that the general expectation among investors and industry practitioners is that well performance should improve over time as a result of the technical learning curve. This has generally been true in several other high-profile resource plays (Eagle Ford, Bakken, etc.). If the well-to-well performance correlation in the Mississippian is indeed poor, this expectation may be frustrated. As the industry tries to place many additional wellbores in the immediate vicinity of existing prolific producers, a more pedestrian outcome for these new offsets may create an impression of deteriorating performance. Independent verification of SandRidge's well performance in southern Comanche County helps to interpret the company's 542 MBoe PUD EUR estimate for the area. The stand-out EUR appears to be driven by a high weight in the company's PUD inventory in Comanche County of a singular prolific sweet spot. The EUR reflects high well productivity over a relatively small area within the County but should not be extrapolated beyond the localized sweet spot area. Assuming that all SandRidge's PUD locations in the southern half of Comanche County are associated with this gas-prone area, the oil component of the 542 MBoe EUR is likely very low (possibly in a 5% range). As a result, drilling economics in this area are likely inferior to what is implied by SandRidge's 380 MBoe type curve. The company's ability to scale up its drilling effort in this area may be limited both by the natural limits of the sweet spot and due to several other operators holding acreage within its core. Drilling results for the nine horizontal wells in east-central Comanche are weak and do not lend support for further drilling in the area. In the northern half of Comanche County, SandRidge estimates the EUR for its PUD locations at 237 MBoe, which does not sound particularly encouraging from the expected return perspective either. Well productivity challenges that SandRidge faces in Comanche County are in fact not uncommon for the play as a whole: the formation's complexity seems to be the culprit of operators' poor track record of predicting prolific drilling locations, even on delineated properties. Search Go Independent. DUBLINER Christine Kelly has defied all medical predictions and is celebrating the 40th anniversary of her kidney transplant operation in Jervis Street Hospital. Usually kidney transplants need to be replaced after 20 years. But the 63-year-old grandmother from Griffith Avenue on Dublin's northside has beaten that record twice over and is now the longest lasting organ transplantee in the country. Christine told the Herald how terrified she was in August 1973 when her only kidney ruptured after the birth of her second daughter. "I never knew but the doctors found out I had only one kidney and that it had ruptured," she said. "I had to go on dialysis but my veins weren't good and they told me I needed a transplant. "I was kind of scared because the operations were new and not very successful at the time. Christine's older sister Mary proved to be a perfect match for a living kidney donation and the two sisters underwent surgery on Christine's third wedding anniversary on March 1, 1974. "I never looked back since," she says. Sadly Mary, a mother-of-five, died in 2000 of breast cancer and a year later Christine developed the same cancer because she carried the same BRCA1 gene. Christine had a breast removed and 18 months ago she also had open heart surgery for a valve replacement, but she insists her health is good. "I think positively. I get on with life. I don't class myself as being sick. I never did," she said. "I couldn't thank Mary enough. If it wasn't for her I wouldn't be here. Christine says she treasures every day of her life and urges everyone to carry an organ donor card.
