Read more »I figured after my last post, it’d only be fair to follow up with the other side of the coin and give men a female’s perspective on things. (This may be difficult to digest for some of my readers who believe I’m a man, but that’s the marvel of the internet, right? I could be. I could also be a purple unicorn that learned to type with my magical horn on a very large computer keyboard. Shutterstock1. Be honest. There is no fancy way to do this. Just. Be. Honest. If you’re into her, then tell her you’re into her. Don’t play that “I’m-trying-to-come-off-cool-and-macho-so-I’m-gonna-play-like-I’m-not-that-interested-so-she-falls-for-me” crap. That shit’s lame. (And let me tell you, any girl that falls into that passive-aggressive play is not in the right state of mind to be in a serious relationship, especially with you.) Stop it. If you’re not that into her, then just be honest! Let her know you’re not as interested as she might be and spare her the run-around of awkward texts you’re trying to avoid sending. Don’t be that guy. Nobody likes that guy. 2. Don’t hide your habits. We’re not idiots. Porn, cars, video games, beer, sports… It’s not that we have a problem with you liking these things… we have a problem with you trying to do these things behind our backs. Don’t lie about what you’re doing or who you’re doing it with. Follow the first tip. If she has a problem with what you’re doing, ask her why instead of just finding an elaborate way to hide it from her the next time you decide to do it. And to some of our “free-lookers” out there, don’t feed that “you’re the most beautiful girl in the world” line to your girl if you’re the guy that turns his head sideways every time you see a girl walk past with tight jeans on. If you’re a “Barney Stinson”, then own it and let her know. Bullshit begets bullshit, so keep it real. If she doesn’t trust you, then there’s an element already missing in your relationship that you might want to think/talk about. 3. This one gets the special asterisks because this one, I feel, is the MOST important. I can’t stress this one enough. Men have this habit of speaking through a series of grunts, sighs, head nods, or eyebrow raises while their arms are folded over their chest listening to us talk. I’m almost positive there’s not a man out there who enjoys listening to the words, “are you even listening to me?!” – But there’s a reason she’s asking, guys. We’re not inside your heads, we don’t know what you’re thinking and if you are listening to us, a lot of the times, you’re not showing us any indication it got through. Silence isn’t the answer we want. We want a “yeah, I got you” or “no, I don’t agree with you.” We know YOU don’t want to do anything that’ll trigger “conversation overtime,” but if you didn’t agree with something we said and you held it in… you’re gonna have the same discussion with us again in the future. So save us both some time. Speak up. 4. Don’t be lazy. No one’s asking you to solve all the world’s problems and be superman, but at least handle your shit. Take care of yourself, manage your money, be responsible at work. Basic. Don’t expect a woman with a perfect body if you have flaws of your own, don’t expect a woman to be independent and make her own money when you don’t have your own, and don’t expect a woman to “put out” for you when you ain’t got the moves yourself. Be who you want to attract. No, she don’t want no scrub. I was appalled, but convinced you that I cared about your stories. 5. Show Your Appreciation. So you might not be the best at remembering birthdays or anniversaries, but there are other ways to show you appreciate her. Sometimes, she can be wrapped up in the things that are going on in her life and be so overwhelmed that her laundry’s backed up, or the dishes haven’t gotten to… her dog has been cooped up at the apartment… I’m not saying to become a “man-ny” for her, but doing something as small as taking one item off her to-do list will make her eternally grateful. Show her you appreciate her time by freeing it up for her. By doing that, you’ve got more time to be together, she’s got more energy and hey-oh. Bring on the wine. 6. Be Observant. It amazes me to this day what little details my husband can pick up from my daily nuances. He has a way of knowing what I need at the end of the night because of things I’ve let him know during the day about how it’s going. I have a pretty stressful day job and most of the time my projects take a long time to complete, so I don’t get to see immediate progress at the end of the day. One night, I was particular stressed out because I felt like as much work as I was putting in, I wasn’t seeing results soon enough. I came home to my husband standing in the kitchen with paint cans, rollers and wine and he told me to pick up a roller and go to town on the walls. Seeing the colors I wanted (because he knows my favorite colors) take over the walls and watching it happen instantaneously completely took away that feeling of not seeing progress. Observe her lifestyle and see what ways you can enrich it for her. It goes a long way. 7. Be Respectful. We know you have two sides. You have your “bro” side and you have your “boo” side. We don’t mind either of them, but know when it’s appropriate to be one or the other. Communicate with us before you bring us around your friends. We know they might not always be the most “kosher” group. Some girls are totally okay with vulgarity, sports talk and “guys being guys” and some girls aren’t comfortable with it. Know which girl your girl is before you bring out the “bro” and respect both sides, because your friends don’t want to be pegged as assholes, either. 8. Support Her. In summation, I’ve “officially” dated three guys since my epic ex. No. Not through your bank account. (If she’s looking at you to support her financially without any interest of accumulating her own source of income, it’s probably not the best grounds to start a relationship.) Support her beliefs, her passion, her ambitions… her goals. Be supportive of the things she decides to pursue be it professionally or personally. Don’t diminish what dreams she has even if they’re not reasonable to you. Talk to her if you feel that way, but don’t discourage her. When you’re in a relationship, you protect each other’s integrity, so don’t ever do something that would harm her (or your) reputation— especially when she’s trying to make a mark in her career. 9. Listen. This does not mean blankly stare at her until her jaw stops moving. “Hearing” is not the same as “listening.” Yes, we as women like to talk a lot and sometimes, we can get carried away, but if we’re taking the time out of our day to say anything at all to you, there’s a reason. You might have different standards than us as to what’s important or not, but if it’s important to us, then it should be important to you. You want to keep us happy, right? (Translation: you want us to stop talking, right?) Then listen to what we have to say no matter how irrelevant you think it is. 10. Be Romantic… At Least Once in a While. I said once in a while. Don’t go breaking the bank and trying to ball if you don’t got the guap. That’s just ignorant. Some guys overdo it and some guys couldn’t be romantic if their life depended on it. We’re not expecting puppies and diamonds everyday (and if she is, sit her down and ask her very politely what her priorities are…). We just want to feel desired. Romantic gestures don’t always have to be big. They can be small and sweet. Randomly take her out to where you first met and re-enact your first date on a night she’s feeling down. Upload the newest album from one of her favorite artists on her playlist while she’s away so it’s ready to listen to for her morning commute… And yeah, once in a while, go big. Fill the house with candles and roses and all that other sweet crap, and make it personal. She just wants to know you want her. 11. Make Love. This can mean more than just sex. I say “make love” and I mean be intimate with her. Know her body, know her mind. Connect with her in a way that’s welcoming, inviting and embracing. Don’t just lock the door and say, “welcome to the jungle, bitch!” (At least not seriously, we all appreciate a good laugh.) Yes, we do like confidence. We like when you can show us your masculinity and that your hard work at the gym’s paid off. But so much of the time, we’re aware that you’re so conscious of trying to be a rock star in bed that you’re not really paying attention to the cues we’re giving you of what we want to feel. Sometimes, we’re shy about what we want, and sometimes, we don’t know what you want. It’s okay to tell us what you like and how you like it. It’ll give us that comfort to know that we can tell you what we want. Sex is supposed to be communicative, mutual, and reciprocating. If you’re in that mindset of “I’m getting mine, I hope you get yours,” then you’re missing out on a whole deeper level that you could both be enjoying a lot more. Both subscribe to a more-is-merrier attitude when it comes to curating the cultural mixing pot. So it's only fitting that this year's annual dublab fundraiser salon, Creative Cultivation, doubles as the inauguration party for the newest iteration of the JF Chen juggernaut. Among the featured guests, sponsors and participants are zeitgeist favorites like The Album Leaf, Grace Oh, Sqirl, Tanya Aguiniga, Carlos Nino, Grand Central Market, Fusicology and Tito's Handmade Vodka. That means the party checklist includes DJs, live music, art, multimedia/video installations, impossibly gorgeous elements of classic and contemporary interior design, cocktails, yummy catered food and other interactive surprises. More Apr. 3 JF Chen Shana Nys Dambrot Calendar Dance Recommended Tere O'Connor Dance The Skirball Cultural Center doesn't present much dance, but when it does, the group usually is a modern/contemporary company, usually from New York, usually worth attention, and usually connected with Jewish culture. Choreographer Tere O'Connor and his troupe clearly fill the first three criteria, and the two works being performed, Sister and Poem, may touch on the fourth element. As a choreographer, O'Connor is known for finding unexplored middle ground between seeming unalterably opposite elements. The two works scheduled here are part of a multiyear project titled BLEED, which O'Connor has described as exploring how conflicting cultures eventually blend in a symbiotic relationship. Given how much blood is spilled in cultural/geopolitical/religious conflicts, the search for blending rather than bleeding is a noble endeavor. After seeing parts of BLEED in a studio setting, Skirball director of programs Jordan Peimer convinced O'Connor to stage the performance in the Getty Gallery rather than the theater. As an extra bonus, on Saturday morning, O'Connor and the dancers offer Movement for Non-Dancers, a free workshop about his approach to movement and a chance for participants to develop a bit of their own choreography. This visit, Harrell and a quartet of dancers revisit that era and the possibilities if those stars of voguing had been part of post modern Judson Church? That bit of history helps with deciphering Harrell’s Antigone Sr./Twenty Looks or Paris Is Burning at the Judson Church (L) onstage this weekend. In a way, the story of “Call for Papers: Italo Bressan, Franco Marrocco and Alessandro Savelli” is as much a story about friendship as it is about modern European painting. The three artists are close in age. All attended the Brera Art Academy in Milan, and all currently teach there (Marrocco is also the school’s director). Although they worked independently and experimented with other media during the conceptual and stylistic reformations of the 1970s and ’80s, all three eventually not only returned to Brera but to abstract painting as well. Curated by Anna Dusi and Giovanni Iovane, the show (as its name implies) comprises works on paper and references the academic and poetic idioms in which they remain rooted. Concurrently, Bergamot Station’s ADC/Building Bridges hosts “Franco Marrocco: Work on Paper,” curated by Dusi and Marisa Caichiolo, exploring the artist’s versatility in creating substantial works of art with the most ephemeral of materials. See also: Jay Z Concert in Grand Park Sparks L.A. The memo, obtained by the Weekly, says, "Allowing this event would set a precedent for other concerts. The LAPD memo says costly perimeter policing would result if Jay Z and rave artists were allowed to take over the park. The loud music and [a] $100.00 price would encourage persons to jump fences in order to enter the location, especially near the "Techno Music" area, where attempts to sneak into the venue is common-place and almost a challenge. Jay Z aside, raves and electronic dance music (EDM) concerts have had a hart time finding venues in the greater L.A. market. As the scene has grown - Electric Daisy Carnival sells more than 100,000 tickets for its annual fest in Las Vegas - neighbors' tolerance for their booming bass and party-hearty crowds has waned. On top of all that, EDM's Hard Summer festival and the FYF Fest are without their usual L.A. homes this year because their previous venue, Los Angeles State Historic Park, is closed for renovations. Hard is headed to Whittier Narrows Recreation Area this summer, as the Weekly reported first in February. One concert insider who did not want his name used told us that Hard's organizers were interested in using Grand Park at some point but would first see how things go at Whittier Narrows. Insomniac, the company behind Electric Daisy Carnival, which helped to shut raves out at the publicly owned L.A. Coliseum complex after a teen who had sneaked in and later died of ecstasy intoxication was inextricably linked to the event, is also interested in Grand Park. The company, arguably the largest EDM show organizer in the nation, announced in February that it doesn't have Southern California venues for some of its biggest annual events after holding three festivals last year at San Manuel Amphitheater. We'd love nothing more than to bring a festival back to our hometown of Los Angeles. Finding a venue that's big enough to host a festival is always a challenge, and Grand Park could be the perfect location with an amazing backdrop. Another top concert promoter who did not want to be named told us he had been talking with Grand Park officials on and off for more than a year about hosting a festival there. He wouldn't say if he had EDM, indie or something else in mind. The police memo shows that Goldenvoice's FYF Fest requested to use Grand Park two years ago but opted for the State Historic Park near Chinatown after being turned down. Though raves have been the subject of bad press throughout the nation in recent years, things have changed a lot since 2010, when L.A.-based Electric Daisy Carnival became the lightning rod for controversy over the parties. For one thing, the biggest concert promoters in the country have largely taken over the electronic dance music market. Live Nation is the king of concert companies, and it has a 50 percent stake in Insomniac. Likewise, it bought out Hard in 2012. Boosters of EDM argue that the events have become increasingly safe and professionalized as a result. We reached out to a Live Nation representative but she did not address our questions. Our concert insider who gave us information about Hard's potential designs for Grand Park said Live Nation has shown interest in doing a variety of ticketed events at the downtown venue. The Live Nation-promoted Budweiser Made in America festival featuring Jay Z, which appears to have been green-lighted by the office of Mayor Eric Garcetti, would sell 50,000 tickets for two days. It would be the first ticketed concert at the venue, which was billed as "the park for everyone" when it opened in the summer of 2012. A City Hall official who did not want to be named said L.A. leaders appeared to be open to raves, but he emphasized that each event at Grand Park would have to be considered on a case-by-case basis. "Any event is possible if it's well-planned-out," he said. Keep in mind that Garcetti, who appeared on KCAL9 TV last night sounding enthusiastic over the possibility of a Jay Z show, appears to be a fan of EDM. When he was running for mayor he held a fundraiser at Avalon Hollywood at which top DJ Steve Aoki performed. "If you like electronic music, then L.A. is where the DJ scene is at," he said during the May event. This party tonight literally could determine the outcome [of the race]. If you were each responsible for 100 voters, this room could turn this election my way. The next month he told a Reddit Ask Me Anything audience that raves should be able to return to L.A., specifically to the publicly owned Coliseum. See also: Raves Should Be Able to Return to L.A. Two representatives at the office of L.A. County Supervisor Gloria Molina, who is largely credited with getting Grand Park built, said she wouldn't necessarily object to raves. The venue is run jointly by the city and the county, though the city could have outsize influence as a result of having jurisdiction over park-dissecting streets that would have to be closed. When it comes to Jay Z or raves, Molina spokeswoman Roxane Marquez told us, "So far she doesn't have any objection. Grand Park was envisioned as a venue for all different types of events, including concerts. She's concerned with just making it safe. Marquez said that although an objection by Molina would carry much weight, programming at the venue is "pretty independent. We called Lucas Rivera, director of the park and the man responsible for programming. A spokeswoman said the Jay Z event was "a rental" with the city "working" directly with promoter Live Nation. We weren't able reach Rivera to ask what he thinks about raves. Hard by Timothy Norris for LA Weekly Brady Westwater, a concerned resident sometimes credited as being the unofficial "mayor of downtown," didn't like the sound of it when we told him raves could be coming to Grand Park. "If you're going to go straight-up rave I think that would be insane," he told us. "I'm not even a huge fan of doing ticketed events there. In public parks security is going to be porous at best. KPCC broke the news of the Jay Z concert Tuesday. The same day LA Weekly learned that the concert was such a done deal in City Hall that a press conference had been scheduled for Tuesday to announce ticket sales. It was canceled after news leaked of the event. Downtown area city Councilman Jose Huizar, who clearly appears to feel like he was cut out of the loop, filed a council motion that asks for a report on "any permits, actions, public safety concerns, and any necessary cost implications of the proposed" noon-to-11 p.m. event. He proposes to withhold permits until he's seen that report. One of his main concerns is downtown street closures that could last as many as 10 days, according to the motion. The mayor tried to assuage critics by saying approval for two-day party will be brought before the full City Council, although such a move is neither customary nor necessary. A few months ago the LAPD issued that opinion about the Jay Z show, unbeknownst, apparently, to the local councilman and the public at-large. The city may run into legal issues should they deny other events after allowing this Music Festival. Approximately 2 years ago, Goldenvoice Entertainment requested this area for a smaller audience (Approx 20,000 persons) and was denied. As a result, they began holding the shows in the LA State Historic Park. Allowing this Music Festival could result in several "Raves" a year in the downtown area. Feed&Grain Magazine - How to Decontaminate a Dry Grain Processing Facility

Using chlorine dioxide gas to reduce the threat of Salmonella spp. A row of chlorine dioxide gas cannisters line a dry grain facility in preparation for Salmonella spp. decontamination. Grain processing facilities provide an ideal scenario for salmonella contamination. Dry facilities are rarely decontaminated or cleaned with liquid disinfectants and the huge amount of product going through the facility every day make it ripe for contamination. Regardless of where the salmonella originates from, once a facility and its equipment become contaminated, it becomes a source for future contaminations. A 280,000-cubic-foot protein powder grinding, drying and packaging facility had a Salmonella spp. contamination of some of the equipment. The facility was nearly impossible to decontaminate using conventional methods, not only because it was a large facility, but also because of its height. It was 90 feet tall with three floors in need of decontamination (the second through fourth floors). The second and third floors had 20-foot-high ceilings, and the fourth floor had a 40-foot-high ceiling. The facility was also intricate, having equipment ranging from the very large to small. Some areas were very tightly packed, narrow, with lots of sensitive electronics and processing equipment. Chlorine dioxide gas was used to decontaminate the facility, which consisted of a variety of large rooms and large intricate and sensitive pieces of equipment. These areas included processing, conveyor systems, dryers, packaging, loading docks and offices. There were many different types of materials and surfaces within these facilities, including stainless steel, epoxy-painted walls, raw concrete walls and floors, solid flooring, painted steel cabinets, plastic light fixtures, plastics, conveyor belts, many different types of electronics and rubbers. Once it is determined that a facility needs decontamination, there are many possibilities as to which decontamination method would be best. The most common method is spraying/wiping/mopping and fogging/misting with a high level disinfectant and steam. Because the facility is a dry powder facility, basic washing and rinsing are not an option. Liquid disinfectants are not used because they include moisture, which causes organisms to multiply. If a liquid decontamination is not 100% effective, it only fuels microbial growth. In the past, this facility utilized steam to kill organisms. While steam can work, it is hard to be 100% effective. Since it is creating moisture, if it is not 100% effective, it can make the situation worse. For steam to work, temperatures need to be over 250 F for 15 to 30 minutes. While this sounds easy, metal surfaces dissipate heat rapidly, and cement has a lot of thermal mass and warms slowly. Because of the limitations of this method, a more thorough process was needed. Three different decontamination agents; vapor phase hydrogen peroxide (VPHP), ozone gas and chlorine dioxide (CD) gas, were considered. All were known to be effective decontaminants for spore and non-spore forming bacteria under ideal laboratory conditions (i.e., clean flat surfaces lacking porous materials or potential dead-legs with which fumigant penetration might be inhibited). VPHP was not chosen because it quickly condenses and does not get the required distribution. Ozone has too short of a life and breaks down before being distributed throughout the facility. Chlorine dioxide (CD) gas was chosen because it is a true gas, which can evenly distribute, getting into the cracks and crevices. It is registered as a sterilant with the Environmental Protection Agency, so it gets complete inactivation of all organisms. Chlorine dioxide has also been used to successfully treat food and drinking water for years without leaving residues. Full decontamination of the facility and all the equipment was critical before starting production again. The persistent problem had existed for years, and pressure was on to finally eradicate it. Since this facility was a supplier of ingredients, their customer was expressing strong concern for the issues. This was also critical financially, since the loss of a customer or recall due to contamination is extremely costly. Foodborne illnesses cost an estimated $152 billion each year in health-related expenses (Scharff, 2010). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that each year roughly one out of six Americans (or 48 million people) is affected, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die from foodborne diseases each year (CDC, 2011). In addition to the recalled product values, the impact could result in a reduction in sales, product liability claims and image rebuilding costs, along with the cost of restoring status within distribution channels (Gunther, 2010). The decontamination preparation, actual decontamination and cleanup took place over the course of two days. However, prior to the decontamination event, the facility was cleaned of most of the visible dirt. Five engineers from the decontamination service provider supplied the staffing and expertise for the project. The first step was to seal the facility. The HVAC system was then shut down in order to contain the gas during the process. The supply inlet and exhaust outlet in the mechanical room on the roof were covered and taped with plastic sheeting. The personnel doors (except one used for entry and exit prior to the decontamination) were sealed with duct tape. Once the sealing was completed, tubing was run. The gas generators were located outside the decontamination areas, and red 1/4-inch tubing was run from the gas generators to the 66 gas inject locations inside the area to be decontaminated. To measure and record the CD concentration, green 1/4-inch tubing was run from the ClorDiSys Sensor Module to 13 sensing points throughout the area being decontaminated. The sensor module consists of an industrial UV-VIS spectrophotometer, which accurately monitors and logs the concentration/dosage. This enables that the process parameters are met prior to the process being terminated, ensuring that every decontamination cycle is effective. Fans were then placed throughout the facility to aid the distribution of the gas and humidity. On the second day, biological indicators (BIs) were placed throughout the facility. B. Stearothermophilus BIs containing 1 million spores each, was chosen because of their resistance. Sixteen (eight pairs) of BIs were placed throughout the facility, mainly in areas that did not have gas sampling or injection points, to demonstrate distribution and provide evidence as to the effectiveness of the process. Each of the BIs was located within areas where environmental swabbing resulted in positive samples for Salmonella spp., or which were considered difficult for the gas to reach. The gaseous chlorine dioxide process used is registered by Clordisys Solutions Inc. with the EPA (EPA #80802-1) as a sterilant, and if process parameters are met, then biological efficacy is ensured. The validated photometric measurement ensures proper concentrations are met for six-log-sporicidal kill. Once everything was in place, the process of humidifying was initiated. This step is required to soften spore walls if sporicidal kill is needed. Humidification was accomplished using the in-house steam system. After all the rooms were at the minimum RH level of 65% for a minimum of 30 minutes, the steam systems were shut down. At this point, the gassing process was initiated by opening the 2% reagent gas cylinders to start creating the CD gas. A CD gas concentration of 1 milligram/liter was targeted and reached. The target concentration of one milligram/liter or 362 ppm has a typical exposure time of two hours, which equates to (362 ppm * two hours) = 724 ppm-hours. In approximately 4.5 hours, the minimum dosage of 724 ppm-hours was exceeded, and the gas injection was terminated. Once the desired exposure was completed, aeration was initiated by starting the exhaust system and removing the plastic covering the exhaust grills. Next, the supply was started, and the plastic covering the supply inlets was removed. Within 30 minutes most of the readings were at 0.0 milligram/liter to 0.1 milligram/liter and a few at 0.2 milligram/liter. At 60 minutes, the concentration was at or below 0.1 ppm. (The current Occupational Safety and Health Administration permissible exposure limit (PEL) for chlorine dioxide is 0.1 ppm as an eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA) concentration [29 CFR 1910.1000, Table Z-1]). Sixty minutes after aeration was started, the facility was entered using proper gowning techniques and the fans, injection and sampling tubing were removed. At this point, the decontamination was officially over and the facility was able to start up production once again. The chlorine dioxide gas decontamination of the 280,000-cubic-foot dry grain facility was successful. This was determined by gas distribution at proper levels as measured by the Clordisys EMS, length of exposure at measured values, complete kill of all biological indicators, lack of positive swabs, no physical residue and no visible indication of material degradation on any of the equipment, lights or electronics left within the building. The area was free of CD gas within one hour of aeration and safe to enter. During the decontaminations, the entire area surrounding the section of the facility being decontaminated was periodically scanned with a low-level sensor and no leaks were detected. When implemented as directed, CD has been shown to be a flexible, scalable, practical and effective method for microbial decontamination of large facilities with minimal work, minimal down time and with the effectiveness of a true gas. It is estimated that more than 750,000 steel grain bins have been built in the United States in the past 75 years. It is anyone’s guess how many of these are still in use. In recent years, the industry has erected between 10,000 to 16,000 steel bins a year. SES Urges Africa to Embrace Satellite Technology to Accelerate Education Development Programs

LUXEMBOURG--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SES (NYSE Paris:SESG) (LuxX:SESG) has called on Africa to begin satellite-powered e-school pilot projects to improve teacher competency on the continent. The recommendation follows a roundtable discussion, attended by high level politicians and leaders from Africa and Europe, during the first day of the fifth EU-Africa Business Forum which took place in Brussels on Monday, March 31 and Tuesday, April 1. Christine Leurquin, VP, Institutional Relations, SES, chaired the panel, ‘Creating partnerships to bring e-schools to rural Africa: Offering incubator-backed seed and early stage funding’, which discussed how a lack of connectivity in Africa remains a key bottleneck to development. The roundtable participants concluded that, in order to strengthen education in Africa, it was vital that e-learning connectivity equipment was made exempt from licensing, customs taxes and fees to boost education and jobs on the continent. African and European Heads of States were also urged to set up a new fast track Pan-African financial instrument to meet ICT initiatives for e-schools before 2020 to prioritize broadband infrastructure deployment for relevant and innovative e-services, starting with e-schools. Meanwhile, SES called for African Governments to identify major e-school pilot-projects (Incubators) in two to three African countries to improve teacher competency and to deploy them immediately thanks to satellite coverage. SES and Teachers Media International (TMI) will also partner to launch an e-learning pilot project in Liberia through an incubator program for education, giving a concrete example of the e-learning schemes SES wants to lead. “Access to low-cost satellite based services to schools will be inhibited, and in some cases prevented, unless national and regional groups of administrations apply policies and regulations that more effectively facilitate their use,” said Leurquin. “There are new opportunities for ubiquitous deployment of low-cost satellite services to small businesses and consumers. However, disproportionate licensing fees combined with customs fees are unnecessarily thwarting access to communications. The objective of e-schools is to introduce new and better learning forms based on ICT and connectivity to enrich content. With e-learning, students are able to acquire knowledge, learn how to process information and collaborate. It also imparts ICT skills to children in primary and secondary schools, as well as enhancing the quality of education by connecting teachers to training programs. The fifth EU-Africa Business Forum aimed to engage the private sector in sustainable and inclusive growth. Sonny, the legendary south Texas coach has settled at Somerset High School in Texas, has built some programs from nothing and turned around a couple, too. Along the way he has coached a few special quarterbacks such as future NFL players Jim Bob Taylor and even his two sons, Ty and Koy Detmer. Ty, of course, became a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback at Brigham Young University: Koy went on to have a respectable pro career after starring at the University of Colorado. Sonny finds humor in how Taylor, who quarterbacked the Baltimore Colts right before they defected to Indianapolis, got so upset after learning he had been cut that he up and went fishing and missed out on some other NFL opportunities. Then there are all the stories about his two sons, who could throw a football before they could talk. But these days most of the football talk in this ranching community of 1,600 about 20 miles south of San Antonio is an eighth-grade quarterback Sonny has never coached in a game, though he knows the prodigy quite well. The whole town is abuzz about Zadock Dinkelmann, a 6-foot-4 1/2, 212-pound quarterback who was recently offered a scholarship by LSU before playing a down of high school football. For a man who seemingly had seen it all in about five decades of coaching high school football, Sonny initially was taken aback at the timing of the LSU offer. But he isn't at all surprised his grandson will have an opportunity to play quarterback for a major college football program. "He's one of those guys who could probably be whatever he wants to be," Sonny said matter of fact. "He can go to school and major in one of these outer-space things if he wanted to. What Zadock wants most right now is to be free to the teenager that he is. But his life changed dramatically after LSU head coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron called Zadock's dad and Somerset district athletic director/defensive coordinator Johan Dinkelmann to let him know the Tigers were extending a scholarship offer to his son to become a member of their 2018 recruiting class. Zadock and Johan were heading to a Bulldogs boys basketball playoff game when they got the news from Baton Rouge. "I couldn't believe it," Zadock said. "We were in the car, and it was totally unexpected. They said it, and me and my dad were both like trying to hold back our screams so it wouldn't seem like we were so stunned by it. But we were. Word quickly spread through the Dinkelman/Detmer family. First Johan called his wife, Dee. Then Dee called her brother and co-worker at the local elementary school, Koy, who then put a call in to big brother Ty, who lives in Austin. Somewhere in there word got back to Sonny, who had quietly gotten the ball rolling at LSU by sending tape of Zadock to an old associate in the Tigers' athletic department who forwarded it to Miles and Cameron. Once Zadock officially gave his non-binding verbal commitment to the LSU Tigers, a program he has shared an affinity for with his grandfather John Dinkelmann since he can remember, his days of normalcy as an adolescent were quickly altered. Just like that, Zadock went from Somerset's best kept secret to the young man everyone wanted to know. Up until then he was just the kid with unbelievable size for his age, a rocket of an arm and an uncanny understanding of the game, which comes from growing up in a football family. Now everyone wants to know more about the young man who has been labeled the next phenom after landing a scholarship offer to play football for an SEC power while still in middle school. Dad, granddad and uncle Koy have been the protectors, fielding the majority of the questions about the unusually early decision. Zadock, meanwhile, has primarily gone about being his free-willing self, smiling, joking, forgetting things and bouncing his imaginary basketball every chance he gets. Despite a scholarship secured to his dream college, he's back to being a normal teenager -- at least among family in this close-knit community. His mom, Dee, who calls him Zaddy, says he feeds the chickens in the mornings before school, is conscientious and polite, but still occasionally forgets things such as his lunch money and a pair basketball sneakers his junior high school football coach now claims as his own. And it can't be forgotten that these days Zadock has added raising guppies to the equation. "It's been normal, really," Zadock says of life since committing to the Tigers. "Just 100 more followers on Instagram, but that's it. It's the same around his junior high school campus, where Zadock starred on the boys basketball team and is currently participating in track & field (hurdles and high jump). "At my school it hasn't really changed, they just gave me a nickname: They call me 'LSU,'" he said with a smile. "But it hasn't really changed with the respect level and all of that. "It's just the way I like it, just normal. The "normal" around the Dinkelmann/Detmer family is football. Plain and simple. In addition to his grandfather being a well-respected high school coach and something of a quarterback guru, Zadock grew up watching his uncles play the quarterback position at a high level. Zadock, the youngest of three sons, also saw his oldest brother Stevie Dorman break many of the Detmer brothers' area passing records when he led the Bulldogs before going on to play at Colorado. And now Zadock's cousin Koy Jr. is heading into his senior year and third season as the Bulldogs' starting quarterback. Koy Jr., also known as Little Koy, is drawing interest from programs such as BYU, the University of Utah and the University of Houston. "They showed me this is serious and that you really have to work and you will get it," Zadock said of his relatives that played the position. "I know Ty wasn't the biggest guy, he was real small, but he was a great player. He worked out and did all of this stuff so that he could play like the guys who are 6-4 or 6-5 and outrun them and shake them. Football isn't just on his mom's side. Zadock's father Johan, who is a sizable man himself at 6-4 and a native of South Africa, played tight end for the University of Cincinnati and had a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns. But perhaps what Zadock got most from his dad's side of the family is size. Johan has two brothers who are 6-7 and 6-8. One of Zadock's uncles, Frans Dinkelmann, played basketball at Oklahoma State when Miles was the head football coach in Stillwater and then France went on to play professionally overseas. "The joke is Zadock has my father's brains and my husband's braun," Dee said laughing. But what Zadock seemed to have gotten equally from both sides is a thirst to compete. The five mandatory holiday gatherings at the Detmer ranch are all about competition. The family competes mightily, whether it is playing cards, hunting for Easter eggs or throwing cow patties (dried up waste) in discus competition. "It's been really good, just a lot of competition," Zadock said while sitting in hid dad's office at Somerset High School. "There is always a lot of competition going on. "And it's not just competition in football. It's competition in everything," Dee chimed in from across the room. "It's competition in who can walk the farthest, who can stretch their neck the tallest. Game balls are part of every Detmer household and that is at granddad's request. There is a box of footballs, basketballs and baseballs in every living room in the family. Dee, however, draws the line at golf balls. But Sonny's philosophy is simple: "You can fix a window, but you can't fix a throwing motion. Since all of the boys were young, Sonny insisted on teaching them to pass a football the correct way and that starts with keeping the throwing elbow up. The art of passing was instilled in Stevie, Hunter (the Dinkelmann's middle son), Little Koy and Zadock since the time they could remember. "He has always been in my ear," Zadock said of his grandfather. "I will be throwing to my little cousin and I will hear, 'Pick up your elbow, you're not throwing it right. Surprisingly, in a family where football is so prevalent, Zadock didn't get a chance to put all of the throwing lessons learned into practice until he was finally allowed to play in the sixth grade. Johan didn't want to expose his unusually tall son to football before he was physically ready. "We've been around football for a long time and there is a lot of contact, obviously it's a physical sport," Johan said. "We wanted to minimize the risk of a kid that's growing ... "I think if they play when they are too young and have all of that contact, I don't think it's good for them. But when finally allowed to play competitive football, Zadock was a natural from the start. He tossed three touchdown passes in his organized football debut. Then during his first game in seventh grade, Zadock threw a 40-yard bomb for a touchdown and seemingly hasn't looked back since. Zadock and his class at Somerset Junior High School went undefeated in two seasons and now head to ninth-grade football at the high school that is 4 miles down the road on Loop 1604. There are several talented players on the team, but Zadock stands out for more than his stature. "In his play you see the passion of football and wanting to make a big play," said Somerset Junior High coach Bo Caddell. "Then you have to remind him it's a long game. Calm down, one play is not going to kill you. "From where he was last year to this year, he has progressed tremendously. It's not just his athletic ability, but his mentality for the game. Zadock, a National Honor Society student, has been really good on the football field. No one would say that. But when the beyond-his-years skill set, physical attributes and lineage are combined, it is easy to see why Miles and Cameron were willing to gamble Zadock would be Tiger-ready four recruiting classes from now. "Obviously that is not the normal thing that happens, happening that soon, that young," said Koy Sr., who runs his dad's wide-open offense at Somerset. "But knowing Zadock and the tools he has, the abilities he has and with the path he has been going on, you knew that big things were going to come his way. "Happening this soon is probably surprising to everybody, but it isn't a surprise that at some point he was going to be offered and be in this situation. It's a real exciting time for the whole family. It's a special thing to get offered a scholarship and especially as young as he was. Miles, who per NCAA rules is not allowed to talk about a recruit until he has signed a national letter of intent, has said in the past that LSU only starts sifting through the middle school ranks when it finds those rare exceptional athletes. 14-year old Zadock Dinkelmann, who has been offered a football scholarship to play for LSU, talks about growing up in the Detmer family. In the summer of 2012, Miles offered 6-2, 225-pound University Lab running back/linebacker Dylan Moses before his eighth-grade season. LSU also offered St. Augustine running back Leonard Fournette, the top recruit for the Class of 2014, as a freshman. The Tigers clearly believe they have found another gem in Zadock. "I played college football and I know if a kid gets talked to or offered at this stage it's because of their size," said Somerset Middle School track coach Josh Harrison, who played running back at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. "He has the physical attributes, so I'm not surprised at all. "I played against LSU twice and he has the physical attributes to fit right in. He can throw the ball and is just going to develop more. "Mentally can he handle a college offense right now? No," Harrison continued. "But he has four years. He hasn't played varsity football yet. He has excellent coaches, he has uncles who have played in the league, his dad played major college football, his grandfather is a legend. So he has excellent coaches to get him where he needs to get. He's going to see plenty of good competition in (Class) 5A and we have plenty good players here already who are going to push him. This is the best thing for him. "I would worry about some kids because I don't think some kids would handle that exposure so early, but his head is not even worried about that. You can see that he is focused on getting better. For Zadock getting better means taking the next step, which will be freshman football this fall. The Bulldogs already have a proven starter in Koy Jr., which means the LSU's prized recruit will cut his teeth in ninth-grade football and as the varsity ballboy on Friday nights. He will get a chance to compete for the varsity quarterback job as a sophomore and likely will hold it for three years, just as Stevie and Koy Jr. before him. "I'm not saying he couldn't do it, but it's not necessary," Sonny said of Zadock playing on the varsity team as a freshman. "When you start doing unnecessary things with guys and trying to push them up, that's when you run into trouble. Despite the national spotlight, any thought of pressuring Zadock to develop before he's ready simply doesn't exist. "He is just a kid, and he's playing and having fun," Sonny said. "He is having fun, and he has not changed one bit since the day it (the LSU offer) happened. He comes over here and hits the weight room. "If anything, it has made him more intense about being perfect. It's not a pressure thing. If you are a good player, it's not a pressure thing. It's more relief than it is pressure, so it's easier. And the idea of biding his time is just fine with Zadock, who is more focused on enjoying himself and developing rather than worrying about being viewed as his family's or college football's next prodigy. "I really want to play high school football, and I want to go win a state championship," he said. "I want to get those things accomplished first and then go to take the next step. But that isn't to suggest Zadock isn't excited about where his career is headed. He fell even more in love with LSU this past fall when he visited Tiger Stadium with his paternal grandfather for the Texas A&M game. Zadock and his family will be on hand Saturday at Tiger Stadium for LSU's annual National L Club Spring Game. "It was the greatest thing ever," Zadock said of his first visit to Tiger Stadium last fall. "The fans. The fans. Every two yards, LSU would get two yards and the fans were like yelling. "Every game is like a big deal for them. And a touchdown, oh they were throwing their cups. They were doing everything. It was crazy. They had all of these chants. The reality, however, is that Zadock's LSU dream could still go unrealized. While Zadock and his family insist the commitment to the Tigers is firm, several factors could come into play over the next four years. Zadock might not develop the way he is being projected. Or, what if Miles and/or Cameron aren't at LSU by the time 2018 arrives? The verbal agreement isn't binding by either party until the national letter of intent is signed, and that can't happen until the National Signing Day on Feb. 7, 2018. "(LSU) is the school I really want to go to," Zadock said, "unless coaches like Coach Miles or Coach Cameron, who are two coaches I really want to play for, leave. Then I might have to consider another college. Somerset High School basketball coach Bryan Penna says Miles and his staff might have to contend with more than other powerhouse football programs trying to sway Zadock's decision. Penna believes there is more than a good chance Zadock could have his choice of major college basketball programs, too. Penna, who intends to play Zadock off the bench on the varsity team next season, said there's a chance Zadock could grow to about 6-9, which could remove him from the football equation. Such an assertion draws only polite smiles from the Dinkelmanns and Detmers. "Mark my words: By the time he is a senior, I truly and honestly believe there is going to be your big-time Les Miles version of basketball coaches in this gym," Penna said. "He's got that type of talent. A 6-9 kid who can shoot and handle the ball. But at this point the focus is on football and this unusual honor that has been bestowed upon this young man and his family. "I was just having fun, I didn't even think college was in the question," Zadock said. "I knew that later on that college was going to come, but in eighth grade I was playing to win this game, not playing to impress any college scouts. "I would say I'm really blessed to be in this spot. Not many kids get this opportunity and I've got it. This is something you really have to be thankful for. NOVA stages 'Midsummer Night's Dream' : Entertainment

Grants offer youths chance to give back to community

Youth volunteers paint a mural as part of the the Youth Neighborhood Association Partnership Program in Las Vegas in 2012. Every year for the past 10 years, the Youth Neighborhood Association Partnership Program has been offering $1,000 grants for youths to create and implement neighborhood-based service learning projects. The program was created in collaboration with the city of Las Vegas to offer youths a chance to become directly involved with their community and make a difference in the lives of others. “The goal of this program is to empower youth to get involved in their communities and teach leadership skills to kids,” said Lisa Campbell, senior neighborhood outreach specialist for Las Vegas. “The program started as a way to engage our youths. In the past, sample projects have included care packages, mural, reading and mentoring projects, services for the homeless and home maintenance services to disabled seniors, according to Campbell. This year, the program has funded 34 different projects throughout Las Vegas. The projects are scheduled to be complete by mid-June. Ward 6 has four projects that have been awarded the grant. “The program has been a tremendous help to the community because it gives youth an opportunity to lead,” said Las Vegas Ward 6 City Councilman Steve Ross. “It helps our youth build character and teaches the importance of serving the community. Ward 6 youths will focus two projects, No Place for Hate and Veterans Smile, on Westcare, an organization that provides a wide spectrum of health and human services in residential and outpatient environments. The first project will focus on creating uplifting cards and bags with a twin comforter, socks and toys for women and children, and the second project will provide positive, uplifting paintingsto be hung along a wall where veteran women are patients or live. Brandon DeWitte, 17, mayor for the Northwest Youth Empowerment Council, is working with the youth council on the Glad 2 Help a Grad project, which plans to purchase caps and gowns for homeless senior students who cannot afford them to graduate. “There are many high school seniors who cannot afford their caps and gowns, which means that they can’t participate in their graduation,” DeWitte said. “We want to prevent students from dropping out by giving them an incentive to graduate. There are approximately 600 high school seniors who cannot afford their caps and gowns in the Las Vegas Valley, according to DeWitte. The youths plan to fundraise with the community and schools to be able to purchase more caps and gowns for more students. In addition, a fourth project, titled Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard Food Pantry, will provide healthy, wholesome food for older adults in need. Those between 8 and 18 years of age who are from neighborhood associations, social organizations, religious groups and educational institutions are eligible to apply for the grant. The projects must be developed and implemented by youth at every stage with adults serving as advisers and address a neighborhood need. Projects must occur within Las Vegas city limits and match the grant funds with volunteer time, in-kind donations of goods and services and financial contributions. Before starting the project, grant recipients are required to sign a contract with the city of Las Vegas, outlining the group’s project commitment and must be completed within five months. Next year’s funding cycle is scheduled to open in mid-August with applications due by mid-November. “It feels good to give back,” DeWitte said. “It opens my eyes to the community and lets me see what’s going on around me and give me the opportunity to make my community a brighter place to live. The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED is an excellent ultra-wide angle zoom with an f/2.8 design, but it's on the pricey side for a specialty lens.By Jim Fisher The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED ($1,999.95) is an ambitious lens—it covers an ultra-wide field of view at its widest, and a 2x zoom ratio that seems modest, but actually changes the field of view quite dramatically given just how much it captures at its widest—and it does it all while maintaining an f/2.8 aperture. It's an excellent performer, even on full-frame cameras, with only a few weak points, and a go-to lens for Nikon shooters who crave an ultra-wide zoom lens. Some folks may prefer a more modest wide zoom, like the less expensive Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G, but when 18mm isn't wide enough, this is the lens to reach for. The 14-24mm is big, measuring 5.2 by 3.8 inches (HD) and heavy at 2.1 pounds. Its front element curves outward, so there's no way to screw in a standard lens filter. Lee Filters sells the SW150 holder for use with the lens; it's pricey at $400, but does include a graduated ND filter, which is often used by landscape shooters to balance the exposures of sky and land. The hood is built in, so Nikon includes a slip-on lens cap. A minimum focus distance of just 11 inches makes it possible to get right up to your subjects and taking in a lot of the environment in the background. The zoom ring is in the usual place, near the base of the lens, and the manual focus ring sits right behind the hood. Both are covered in a rubber texture for easy gripping, and the textures vary so you can tell them apart by touch. The lone control switch on the lens toggles manual and automatic focus. I used Imatest to check the sharpness of the lens when paired with the 36-megapixel full-frame Nikon D800. At 14mm f/2.8 the lens is very sharp, scoring 2,984 lines per picture height on our center-weighted sharpness test. There's some drop-off at the edges, but they still manage to top 1,853 lines; we like to see an image that scores 1,800 lines on the center-weighted test, so bettering that figure at the very edges is a plus. Narrowing the aperture to f/4 improves performance; the center-weighted score jumps to 3,235 lines and edges approach 2,300 lines. That level of performance is maintained at f/5.6 and f/8. Barrel distortion is a bit of an issue at 14mm; the lens shows 4.6 percent, which gives photos a very mild fish-eye look with straight lines that bow outward. This can be corrected via software; Lightroom includes a profile for the lens which counters the distortion with a single click. At 18mm the barrel distortion drops to 1.3 percent, which is just slightly noticeable in field conditions. The lens is still sharp, hitting 2,903 lines at f/2.8 with edges that are softer at 2,000 lines, but still pretty sharp. Stopping down to f/4 bumps the overall sharpness to 3,300 lines, and it peaks at 3,550 lines at f/5.6 (with edges that hit 2,400 lines). At 24mm there's no distortion, but the sharpness is a little less even. The center weighted score at f/2.8 is 2,829 lines, but edges drop down to 1,700 lines. Narrowing the aperture to f/4 improves things; the center-weighted score is 3,330 lines and edges show 1,900 lines. There's a modest improvement at f/5.6 and f/8; the lens scores about 3,500 lines at those apertures on our center-weighted test, and edges hover around 1,900 lines. Lovers of ultra-wide perspectives are going to adore the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED. It's not perfect; there's a lot of distortion at the wide end, and landscape shooters are going to want to budget for a filter holder system if they employ graduated neutral density, polarizing, or similar optical filters in their work. It's not a lens every shooter is going to use every day, but when you do reach for it, you won't be disappointed with the quality of images that it captures.
